Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely restful break and are exciting for our time ahead together! We are thrilled to present the Year 3 curriculum newsletter for the first half of the summer term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this upcoming period.
In English, we will be reading 'Sofia Valdez Future Prez', a warm-hearted fiction story about a young girl who wants to make a change to the laws to stop litter pollution after her grandfather has an accident. Through this, we will be writing a scripted-based debate, where they will create arguments for and against a topic.
In Maths, we will be focusing on shapes, statistics and reading data accurately with revision at the end of the summer on all topics taught this year. We will learn how to read angles within shapes and identify properties of different shapes. Afterwards, we will learn how to read data correctly and use graphs and tables to represent data.
This half term our Science topic is 'light' where we will continue to observe how light is produced and how shadows are formed. There will be experiments conducted to see how changing variables affects light travel as well as understanding how reflections work.
In history, we will be exploring Ancient Egypt, with a focus on power and governance - The Lost Queens. We will be building on the knowledge learnt from the previous half term where the class learnt about Egypt's geographical features and the lands terrain. This half term's topic will focus on the Pharaohs of Egypt and how they governed their society with a learning theme around women in power - Cleopatra & Hatshepsut.
The children will be exploring how to use stop-frame animation and how to create a frame-by-frame sequence. This will involve creating an idea, putting it into motion as well as finally evaluating it's effectiveness.
Additionally, the children will explore copyright and ownership and the legalities that go alongside this protected law.
This half term in RE, we will be exploring the importance of teaching Buddhism. We will learn about the main teachings within the religion, explain the key messages of their stories and answer the question: 'How did the Buddha teach that people should live?'
This year, PE will be split into two sessions per week to keep in line with the DfE guidance of 90 minutes of PE per week. We will be applying athletics and track skills and learning how to play competitive football.
In Art, we will be focusing for two weeks on Arts Fortnight, where the children will be creating portrait art based on the theme of 'Rhythm and Blues' and 'Soul' music. The children will be creating a class piece together as well where they will experiment with a large canvas and adding colour and pattern to their canvas to represent the mood of the music and how it makes the listener feel.
The children will be using Charanga to consider how music can help us making peace with any conflicts and how it makes a difference in the world.
In French, we will be recalling our knowledge from the year as well as bein able to learn the names of foods and how to order them correctly and politely.
In RHE, we will be learning about money and how money can make us feel when we have it or when we spend it. We will look at the impact that money has on a person's self view.
