Maundene Weekly
________________________
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been another productive and inspiring week at Maundene. Our pupils have continued to demonstrate our core values of excellence and collaboration, showing a real passion for learning across all subjects. We are incredibly proud of the purposeful and kind community our children build here every day.
The Great Maundene Science Challenge The highlight of our week took place yesterday afternoon as the whole school took part in an exciting science challenge! Our young engineers investigated the physics of flight by designing and testing their own parachutes.
The pupils worked brilliantly to see which models were most effective at slowing a fall, with each year group exploring a different scientific variable:
Reception, Year 1, and Year 2: Compared large and small paper parachutes.
Year 3 and Year 4: Tested if different shapes changed the way a parachute falls.
Year 5 and Year 6: Investigated how changing the surface area affected the speed of descent.
It was wonderful to see such curiosity and teamwork in action. Be sure to ask your child what they discovered about air resistance and gravity during their experiments!
As always, thank you for your ongoing support. We wish you all a wonderful and restful weekend.
Miss Capes, Mrs Taylor and the Maundene Team
At Maundene, we believe that reading is the foundation for all learning. To support our pupils in becoming confident, fluent readers, we encourage a strong home-school connection.
Why Reading Matters: The Facts Research consistently shows that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success—more than their family circumstances or background.
The "10-Minute Impact": Reading for just 10 minutes a day exposes a child to over 600,000 words a year.
Top Tips for Reading at Home:
Make it a Routine: Choose a quiet time each day—little and often is more effective than one long session.
Check for Understanding: Ask questions like "What do you think happens next?" to develop their comprehension.
Follow Their Interests: Whether it is a comic, a recipe, or a book about a favourite TV show, all reading is valuable.
Be a Role Model: Let your child see you reading too; it shows them that reading is an enjoyable life skill.
Local Resources in Medway: With 2026 being the National Year of Reading, there are fantastic local opportunities to explore:
Chatham Library: Offers a brilliant selection of children’s books and free "Storytime" sessions.
Child-friendly Medway: Keep an eye out for the "For the Love of Reading" initiative, which often hosts free book trails in local parks and the Pentagon Shopping Centre.
Family Hubs: Check the local Family Hub app for storytelling workshops designed to help parents make storytime at home even more engaging.
We’ve noticed that Labubu dolls and keychains have become very popular recently. While they are very cute, they are starting to cause some big distractions in the classroom and playground.
To keep our learning time focused and to make sure no expensive toys get lost or broken, Labubu dolls will no longer be allowed in school starting Monday 12th January. Thank you for helping your child leave their "monster friends" safely at home!
Medway Foodbank provides three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people in crisis across the Medway towns.
