Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic winter break and are now rejuvenated and eager to continue their exciting year at Foxfield. We are thrilled to present the Year 4 curriculum newsletter for the first half of the spring term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this upcoming period. You will also see the words that will be used for the spelling assessments this half term.
This half term, children will be exploring the idea of ‘identity and self’ through the core text ‘Wonder.’ They will be working towards creating an inner monologue about Auggie’s experiences of winning a prize. Through this text, children will explore identity through the ideas of differences and what makes each person unique.
In Maths, we will be exploring both abstract and concrete methods of multiplication and division using our times tables knowledge from last term. Afterwards, we will learn about measurement and perimeter where we will link our learning to real life contexts.
In Science this half term, our topic is ‘sound’. We will be exploring how vibrations from sound travel through a medium to an ear. We will then answer the question: "How does our sense of hearing contribute to our overall understanding of the world around us?"
In History we will be learning about the Romans where we will finish our topic by discussing the question: "What legacy did the Romans leave in Britain?"
In Computing, year 4 will be looking into how network devices make up the internet. They will learn this through outlining how websites can be shared via the World Wide Web (WWW), describing how content can be added and accessed on the World Wide Web & evaluating the consequences of unreliable content
RE learning will focus on the different representations of God within Hinduism. We will then answer the question 'How do Hindus show commitment within and beyond their religion?
This term Palm class will be going swimming every Thursday afternoon.
Year 4 will have an indoor session focusing on the skills of striking and fielding within cricket.
We will be linking our DT project to our history topic of the Romans, whereby we will be creating our own Roman aquaducts to successfully transport water!
This half term the children will be looking at the song Mamma Mia and practising the song.
In French, we will be learning to recall family members and to select and apply appropriate adjectives.
Within RHE, we will be exporing the benfits and risks of sharing information as well as understanding that change is part of growing up.
Year 4:
Reading for pleasure daily for a minimum of 15 minutes per day
Practice of weekly spelling list
All multiplication tables up to 12 x 12
Here are the spelling lists for the half term. Children will receive a paper copy of the week's spelling list for them to practice at home.
We use Letter-Join as our new whole-school handwriting scheme. Children can log in to the Letter-Join website at home on iPads, tablets and computers.
To support your child’s learning journey, we have compiled a Home Learning Menu. Your child is already set up and has a secure login for each app, making access simple.
These resources include Letter-Join for handwriting practice, spag.com for spelling and grammar practice, and Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for multiplication practice. Class teachers will assign specific activities on these platforms, and children are able to regularly participate in fun activities.
Children should be encouraged to log into Letter-Join on a weekly basis and complete the activity assigned by their class teacher, linked to the current skill they are learning in class that week. For spelling and grammar, children will be set one activity a week linked to their learning in class. For TTRS, children will take part in a ‘timestable battle’ that will last for three weeks, where daily engagement adds to their final score. The recommended time for this is a minimum of 10 minutes a day. To further support your child’s learning, we will be setting a selection of activities on Purple Mash once every half term. Purple Mash is an online platform containing cross-curricular creative tools and activities that allow children to explore and enhance their knowledge in a fun, engaging way. Your child will be able to work their way through the assigned tasks at their own pace over the course of the half term. The homework will cover a variety of subjects, including core areas such as reading and maths, as well as other curriculum areas like science, history, and computing.
