Year 5

Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic first half of the autumn term and are now rejuvenated and eager to continue their exciting year at Foxfield. We are thrilled to present the Year 5 curriculum newsletter for the second half of the autumn term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this upcoming period.

Autumn Global Outcome

At the end of this term, Year 5 will be investigating reversible and irreversible state changes. Using what they learn, pupils will be experimenting and crafting homemade products to sell at the Winter Fair in December. Every penny raised from their scientific creations will go directly to our chosen charity. Be sure to visit their stall at the fair to support a fantastic cause!

English

In English, the children will be reading the book "Where the river runs gold" and they will be writing their own persuasive letter to the Paragon council advocating for the protection of their sacred river and wildlife.

Maths

In Maths, the children will be recapping their knowledge of multiplication and division and beginning brand new unit of fractions.

Science

In Science, the children will be answering the question "Are all changes of state reversible? To help them answer this question they will learn about the different states of matter and experimenting what changes are reversible and/or irrversible.

History

In History, the children will be answering the question "Why was Britain a desirable country to invade and conquer?" they will do this by looking at how and why the Vikings invaded Britain.

Computing

In Online Safety, the children will be learning about self image and identify and how this looks across the internet. In Computing, the children will be learning about different types of digital drawings and looking into how vectors work.

RE

In RE, the children will be answering the questions "How do Christian festivals celebrate the life of Jesus Christ?" and they will do this by learning about Christanity with a key focus understanding who Jesus was.

PE

In PE, we will be developing our understanding of multi skills, such as leadership and teamwork. The children will also be looking at different types of balances.

DT & Food Fortnight

In DT, the children will be spending a fortnight looking at foods from across the world. This half term the children will be looking at Basbousa cake. After food fortnight the children will be desigining and creating a pulley system to carry an object.

French

In French, the children will be recapping their knowledge of months and learning about how to read the weather and share the weather forecast.

Music

In Music, the children will be answering the question "How Does Music Connect Us with Our Past? and learning singing and playing can be carried out in different styles.

RHE

In RHE, the children will be learning about health and wellbeing and the importance of sleep.

Handwriting practice

We use Letter-Join as our whole-school handwriting scheme. Children can log in to the Letter-Join website at home on iPads, tablets and computers to practise the skills in the classroom.

Spellings

Here are the spelling lists for the half term. Children will receive a paper copy of the week's spelling list for them to practise at home. Each week, children will be quizzed on their spellings, so regular practice at home will be incredibly beneficial. Thank you for supporting their learning!

SuperKind at Foxfield

Whether it’s helping a neighbour, organising a recycling project, fundraising, or volunteering, every positive step counts. By logging their achievements, you help celebrate their dedication, encourage a lifelong habit of kindness and social responsibility, and show them that no action is too small to create real change.

Home Learning platforms

Beyond the core homework activities, Foxfield provides access to several engaging online platforms for optional additional tasks, for which your child has been given a login. These platforms include Letter-Join for handwriting practise, spag.com for spelling and grammar practise, Collins Big Cat e-library for access to all levelled reading books and Numbots for addition and subtraction practise. Class teachers will assign specific activities on these platforms, and children are able to regularly participate in fun activities.

Children should be encouraged to log into Letter-Join on a weekly basis and complete the handwriting activity assigned by their class teacher, linked to the current skill they are learning in class that week. For spelling and grammar, children will be set one activity a week linked to their learning in class. In the Collins Big Cat e-library, the children will have all books within their secure phonics level assigned to their account. This will not replace the physical book they bring home, instead they will have access to reread old titles or have further practise of the previous phonemes they have learnt. For numbots, the children will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of numbers within 100, including quick recalls of addition and subtraction facts. If the level they choose in ‘Storymode’ is too easy, please move onto the next level - you do not have to complete all elements on this website, although some levels can be used to recall learning from Reception. To further support your child’s learning, we will be setting a selection of activities on Purple Mash once every half term. Purple Mash is an online platform containing cross-curricular creative tools and activities that allow children to explore and enhance their knowledge in a fun, engaging way.

Your child will be expected to work their way through the assigned tasks at their own pace over the course of the half term. The homework will cover a variety of subjects, including core areas such as reading and maths, as well as other curriculum areas like science, history, and computing.
