"Step by Step" will not be offered in AY2025.

Eligibility to take this course

Step by Step is offered only for CLA One Year Regular students (Exchange/Invitee students) and Graduate School students.

If you are a CLA Regular/Transfer student, you are not eligible to take this course and must take Japanese 1.

Learning Hiragana and Katakana in "Step by Step"

Although we will practice reading and typing the letters in this course, students are not required to acquire handwriting.

In lesson 1, the class studies Hiragana, and in lesson 2, Katakana. If you worry about learning Hiragana and Katakana at this pace and want to prepare yourself before the class starts, you can use the resources as follows:

Upon completion of "Step by Step"...

If you wish to continue learning Japanese at ICU upon completion of Step by Step, you may not proceed to Japanese 2.

If you wish to continue learning Japanese, you will take Japaese 1.
