The Golden Cobra Band Chicken Supper
No one is exactly sure when the Chicken Supper began. During the spring, the Dad's of the band students, band students, and other community members would line up their big fire pits early in the morning, get the fires started, and began to bbq chicken halves. Each grade would be assigned certain things to bring, like a bag of pinto beans, jars of pickles and mayo, and eggs. All band students were asked to bring bread and a dessert. Under the direction of the cafeteria ladies, students helped to make all the trimmings. The meal consisted of 1/2 Chicken, beans, rice salad, bread, pickles, onions, and a dessert. The Edna Rice Belt would always help by donating the rice. Once the meal was ready, band students dressed in their uniforms and handed out plates.
Afterwards, when all plates had been given out, the band would move to the auditorium to set up for the concert. The concert consisted of contest music, and a few popular tunes of the day.
In later years, the band added brisket and sausage to the menu. Once participation dwindled, the band started having the meal catered. This year, the 23-24 band parents have brought back the original tradition, (with the exception of rice salad).
