Social and cultural activities

Sardinia lies in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, far away from the rest of Europe but, at the same time, represents its maritime heart. The historical heritage of this big island has long been ignored, and Sardinia has instead been seen as a wild and less populated place full of nature, metal mining and sheep, "outside of time and history" as D.H. Lawrence wrote in "Sea and Sardinia".

But the archaeological findings of the last fifty years have revealed a different reality. With almost ten thousand ancient towers called "nuraghe," as well as thousands of sacred wells, giants tombs and other incredible monuments, Sardinia is so far the place with the highest archeological density in the whole world. Sardinia has indeed revealed itself as the most technologically advanced and populated place in the West Mediterranean during the Bronze Age, populated by the best architects, metal masters, warriors and seafarers of that epoch. In addition, a recent theory suggests that Sardinia could be related to the island of Atlantis and its legend as told by Plato... You will be really astonished by its richness.

Sardinia is also famous for its wonderful landscapes, its crystal-clear water with its particular white sand and its wild and pure woodlands and natural setting. It offers many activities for every taste (e.g. archaeological sites, caves, hiking, boating, photography, pink flamingos). We really hope you will enjoy your stay in the beautiful city of Cagliari.

We plan to organize two activities during the week:

These activities are NOT included in the conference fee and need to be paid in cash at the beginning of the activity.

For the registration, please send an email to associazioneorbitando@gmail.com with the following information:

  • Name and surname of the participants;

  • Date and activity (Devil’s Saddle and/or Cagliari Downtown);

  • For the Devil’s Saddle, if you want to use the shuttle bus or not.

Devil's Saddle (astronomy guide)

Castello district, Cagliari

We propose other social and cultural activities during the week or the week-end of the workshop (if possible!).

Other ideas for the weekend...

Here are some ideas for the weekend so that you can enjoy the beauty and richness of Sardinia. We strongly suggest you rent a car since public transport is not very well served in Sardinia.

  • Porto Flavia mining harbour, with a professional guide. You can visit the most incredible and meaningful mining site in Europe. The same day, it is be possible to take a bath in the beach of Masua and visit the historical center of Iglesias as well as the unique caves "Grotte di San Giovanni" in Domusnovas, on the way back to Cagliari.

  • Water sports (swimming, snorkeling, surfing, cliff diving,... :-) ) and archeological adventures around the island of Sant'Antioco (depending on weather conditions).

  • The archaeological site of Nora (guided tour) with the possibility to do snorkeling and visit the turtle hospital.
