I took theatre in high school as a way of getting any kind of production experience I could. I got much more than I bargained for, but in the best way possible.
Set construtction made me much more comfortable with power tools and the basics of putting things together. For part of my time with Spartan Theatre, the school's renovation kept us from having a purpose-built set shop or even a stage, so I saw how a bit of resourcefulness and resilience can drive a creative project towards both completion and success.
For The Monster Under the Bed, I got the chance to direct and edit an ad for the show based around the Matilda Challenge trend of the time. It had been a long time since I'd seen it, but I think it turned out really well having just watched it again.
I spent a lot of my time with Spartan Theatre as a stage manager. This gave me a front row seat to both student and faculty directors, adding on to my understanding of what a creative leader looks like. I had to do a fair bit of leadership as well, where I had to guide projects, manage actors, and make sure things were running smoothly when the director wasn't around.Â
Now, I work with my church's theatre department as their playwright, revising prexisting scripts and creating my own original work.
