Paris is Burning documentary poster, 1990, Illinois State Museum Society purchase
This poster honors the BIPOC, queer, and trans individuals who came before me. Paris is Burning is a documentary that explores the ballroom scene in New York City. The ballroom scene is an LGBTQ+, Black and Latinx American subculture where people dress in drag and model, dance ("vogue"), or perform to win trophies and feel the applause that they are so often denied by the outside world.
I spent some time in the Chicago ballroom scene as a teenager. Being a part of a “ball family” helped me to understand who I was and find the acceptance that I didn’t always find in my community.
Watch June Chappelle discuss what the documentary Paris is Burning meant to him.
