Growing up, our family went to the Apostolic Faith Church in Chicago. This is where my love for gospel and singing started. When I listen to it, I’m transported back in time, and I feel connected to my ancestors.
Church as a kid seemed magical because of all the singing, but as I grew older, though I still loved the music, it felt like a chore. The church I grew up in was outwardly queerphobic, even with smiles in sight. I remember always feeling dirty and praying that the rapture didn’t come while I was thinking about a guy. These feelings led to depression into my pre-teens and teens as I navigated my queer identity.
