These books impacted me deeply because of the way the lives of Black people in the past were depicted. They showed me how my ancestors’ very existence shaped who we are. They really helped me understand how important my heritage is and that I wanted to study it, as well as help others learn their own stories.
These writings allowed me to see the beauty in myself, and my people, but also how the world would see me. I thought they were beautiful and Black. They made me see just how amazing Black creativity is.
