Institut Escola Josep Maria Xandri (from now on “Xandri”) is based in a small town called Sant Pere de Torelló. The town has 2,500 inhabitants, so the school is quite small, with only 300 students. The school admits children from 3 to 16 years old. There are 13 promotions, and they are divided into 4 communities:
From 3 to 5 years old, the little boys and girls learn how to start working in school and how to interact with the other children. They have a lot of fun while doing it, and they start making little tasks that help and encourage them to be independent and to organize themselves since a very young age.
Between the ages of 6 and 9, children start new subjects and projects, with new teachers and older promotions that work with them. They have a reading hour, that helps them with their reading comprehension and encourages them to read outside the school too. Although Catalan is our main language, we also learn Spanish and English at school.
This group of promotions includes 9 to 12 years old. They keep working, like in the middle ones’ community, but each year it gets harder and requires more commitment.
This community belongs to the students between the age of 12 and 16. It is the last stage of compulsory education, and prepares the students for the post compulsory education or training.
Our school has existed since 1934. It used to be a pretty traditional school, with exams and a lot of memorizing subjects. But the school started the reinvention in the year 2016/2017, when some promotions started working on projects (Project Based Learning). By the 2018/2019 school year, encouraged by a change of the school head teacher, all the school started working with this new method.
Project based learning makes learning more dynamic and fun, and we learn how to really work in a group. The projects usually start with something that is happening in the world right now, like a war or a problem, but they can also be historical or just informative. We use caixes (learning boxes) and lliure circulació (free movement). We also learn how to manage time with autonomy, because these tasks tend to be individual.
Likewise, we start every morning with an assembly, and we talk and discuss news or polemical social topics. We use a system that encourages the students to learn about the rights of society, respect and cultures. The school wants us to know what happens in the world, not only in our country, and how the cultures and ethnicities around the world live. They make sure that we consume movies, books, concerts… Xandri teaches us that travelling is the best way to get to know the world, and how it can show us a lot of values.
