Hola,
I am Maestro Rickey. I am the Spanish teacher in 6th & 7th grades this year. This is my 6th year at ICS West. I moved back to Philadelphia in 2001, earning my B.A. in Spanish Literature and Linguistics at Temple. Prior to moving, I attended high school and studied Humanities at Instituto Miguel de Unamuno in Bilbao, Spain and then studied Art at Colorado State University.
The curriculum for 6th, 7th and 8th graders is more rigorous as students begin to learn about the mechanics of the Spanish Language. Vocabulary learning will be a large component of our class for 6th and 7th graders. Grammar will be introduced through the use of thematic vocabulary units. Their notebook will account for the majority of their grade.
In order to ensure students' success when they graduate and leave ICS West, I do want to make sure students have the skills so that, if given the option, they have the possibility of placing into a Level II or III High School Spanish Class.
One of my goals is to challenge students this year and participate in our collective effort to foster students' confidence, both academically and personally. Students are encouraged to incorporate their interests and opinions into each unit of study in order to make learning about the nuances of the language more productive and effective for them.
My other goal is to provide a space where students can feel safe, feel heard and feel appreciated for who they are as individuals on their personal journey as a second language learner.
Con cariño,
Maestro Rickey
