Is used to elicit response and discussion regarding a specific topic. Students are put into pairs or small groups of no more than four. Once team member fans out the questions/prompts/sentence starters and another team member picks one. The member who picked reads the question/prompt/sentence starter aloud and begins to answer. The other team members listen and then provide verbal responses.
Establish a group of four
Use the “role placemat” to assign roles to students.
Student A then fans out the cards and says, “Pick a card, any card!”
Student B chooses a card at random and reads it to the group.
Student C answers the question.
Student D either praises or coaches student C (if coaching I teach “tip, tip, tell” details below.)
The “role placemat” is rotated so that student A becomes student B and so forth, and the process is repeated.
Continue to repeat the process for your allotted time.
