Masks Are Finally Off!
By Micah Newman
On Wednesday, March 2nd, parents received an email from WMS that changed the lives of students forever. Masks were now optional. For many students, this meant that we could end the horrible oppression of our faces known as “face masks.” No more telling us to pull our masks up, cover our noses, or threaten detention. No more teachers telling us to SPEAK UP, I can't hear you through your mask! On seventh-grader, Maya Tsadok, said, “It’s great because we can see people’s faces again, but I hope that nobody gets sick because we don’t have our masks on anymore.” Max Fried, another seventh-grader, is still worried. He offered, “I’m glad that people are happy to have the masks off. Nevertheless, I still keep my mask on because I think it’s safer.” With this comes a responsibility for the students. We must be accepting of all people’s decisions, whether to keep the mask on or to take it off.
After this historic decision, the school recently announced two more changes that will affect us all. On April 1st, students will receive locker assignments and the ability to change classes throughout the day for each class period. Most teachers will not need to travel from room to room with carts of supplies. Students and teachers are rejoicing. The eighth-graders have been able to travel throughout the entire pandemic, however, the sixth and seventh-grades have only experienced room changes for exploratories and foreign lanaguage. One student said, "It will feel like the beginning of a new school year and at the same time it will be like old times."
