School Council
Ysgol y Mynydd Du School Council allows children from Year 2 to Year 6 to engage with school staff and Governors for discussion and decision making about things that matter to them and their school.
In September, our children hold elections to determine their own representatives to the Council. The candidates make a speech to the rest of the school, outlining why they believe they are the best person to represent their peers, before we hold an election. After the ballots are counted and the results are announced, the new members of the School Council decide on a chairperson, secretary, treasurer and digital leadership committee.
From fundraising for charities of their own choosing (both local and national) to creating a child-friendly version of the School Development Plan, the children of the School Council set their own agendas for our meetings - with the aim of working together to improve things for themselves and their whole school community.
Criw Cymraeg
Criw Cymraeg brings together an elected group of pupils from Year Two to Year Six, who are responsible for encouraging and promoting the use of Welsh throughout the school. They are integral in helping to raise awareness of both the culture and history of Wales, leading the singing of Welsh songs and awarding certificates in our weekly Welsh Assembly/Gwasanaeth Cymraeg for the Welsh speaker of the week/Siaradwr Cymraeg yr wythnos.
During their meetings, the Criw Cymraeg decide which vocabulary targets they are going to work on in each class and discuss how to celebrate any special days/events that may be coming up in our calendar.

Ysgol y Mynydd Du School of Sanctuary Pledge
At Ysgol y Mynydd Du, we believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome, and valued.
We pledge to be a school that stands for kindness, celebrates diversity and offers a warm welcome to all—especially those seeking sanctuary.
We promise to:
Learn about the journeys of people forced to leave their homes, so we can understand, empathise, and grow together.
Show compassion in our words and actions, making sure everyone feels they belong.
Speak up against hatred, racism, and injustice, and stand together for peace and fairness.
Open our hearts and our school to all, because every person has a right to safety, friendship, and hope.
Together, as pupils, staff, and families, we will build a community where sanctuary is not just a word, but a promise.
Croeso i bawb – A welcome to all.
Health and Well-being Week Autumn 2024

Here are a few pictures of some of the activities we completed.
Refugee Art Competition 2024- Safe Passage
We took part in the recent art competition. Here are a few examples of some of the work completed. The theme was Safe Passage. We had a few winners at YYMD too!
Refugee Week 2025
This week we had special assemblies, a special visitor sharing her story as well as a variety of activities going on in each of the classes. Each class had some new books too, to share this week. Here are a few pictures to show you what we got up to.
Coming up...
We are very excited to be holding a Welcome Day at our school on Sunday 13th July 2024. During refugee week, pupils spent a lot of time creating small orange origami hearts to give to the children as a small gift on the welcome day. Pupils have also been busy creating posters for the welcome day too.
