Dosbarth Llwy Bren Opening
The opening of the outdoor classroom was a great success, with Year 4, 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoying the experience. The pupils were especially excited to meet Paul Thorburn in person and valued the time he took to talk with them. He kindly signed their papers and showed genuine interest in their work, taking time to read through their PowerPoint presentations, which were all about him and his achievements. This made the experience even more meaningful for the children, boosting their confidence and sense of pride, and helping to make the opening a memorable and inspiring occasion for everyone involved.
Go Safe Road Safety
Go Safe Road Safety visited the class to deliver an engaging and informative session on staying safe near roads and traffic. The pupils listened carefully and took part enthusiastically in discussions and activities, demonstrating a growing understanding of how to keep themselves and others safe. The visit reinforced the importance of making sensible choices, being aware of their surroundings, and following road safety rules, providing the children with valuable knowledge they can use in their everyday lives.
Christmas Service at St Gwendoline's Church
The Year 4, 5 and 6 Christmas service at St Gwenoline’s Church was a truly special occasion. The children performed and sang beautifully, filling the church with festive spirit and confidence. Their clear voices, expressive acting and thoughtful readings reflected the hard work they had put into preparing for the service. They represented the school wonderfully, showing respect, teamwork and enthusiasm throughout, and created a warm, joyful atmosphere that was enjoyed by everyone who attended.
We have had a fantastic half term in Dosbarth Derw. Here is a small selection of some of our learning.
Fire Safety Talk
This term, pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in an engaging and informative Fire Safety Talk designed to help them understand how to stay safe and act responsibly around fire.
The session focused on key fire safety messages, including how fires start, the importance of smoke alarms, what to do in an emergency, and how to keep themselves and others safe both at home and in the community. Pupils learned how to respond calmly and sensibly if they hear a fire alarm, as well as the importance of knowing escape routes and never hiding in the event of a fire.
The talk was delivered in an age-appropriate and interactive way, encouraging pupils to ask questions, share ideas, and think carefully about real-life situations. It also helped develop their sense of responsibility and awareness of how their actions can impact others.
Remembrance Service 2025
Year 6 pupils represented our school with great maturity and respect at the local Remembrance Service. They took part thoughtfully, showing understanding of the importance of remembering those who have served and sacrificed. The pupils behaved impeccably throughout and were a real credit to the school, demonstrating compassion, reflection, and respect during this important community event.
Our Autumn Term 2025 topic is 'Celtic Cymru: Life, Legend & Legacy '.

Here are a few of the things we've been doing so far...
Dosbarth Derw had a fantastic time in their Screen Alliance Wales workshop!
The session sparked creativity and curiosity as pupils explored real screen-used props, asked thoughtful questions, and worked collaboratively to design and build their own Time Machines. It was an exciting, hands-on experience that brought learning to life!
We have recently returned from our residential trip to Manor Adventure. The class voted for the activities they would most like to try during the planning stages and the centre were able to provide almost all of them for us. This was a fantastic opportunity for us all to work together as a team and try new experiences!
Here are a few things Dosbarth Derw got up to...
Our Autumn term 2 2024 topic was 'Pantomimes'.
Take a moment to remember and honour those who have sacrificed for our peace and freedom.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils who represented our school with respect and dignity at today’s Remembrance Day event (Sunday 10th November 2024)
Tomorrow, November 11th, all children will take part in a special assembly in school to continue our reflections and learn about the importance of Remembrance Day.
Thank you for joining us in remembering the fallen.
Our Autumn term 1 2024 topic was 'Food and Farming'.
What did Dosbarth Derw get up to this term?
Our Summer term 2024 topic was 'Significant People'.
Here are some of the things Dosbarth Derw did over the summer term.
Year 6 Fundraising and Colour Run
As always, Year 6 have been working hard to raise money for their Leavers' Day celebrations. They've organised and held a week of sales and games, including a lucky dip and 'sponge the teacher'!
One of the highlights of their fundraising events was the first ever YYMD colour run! They asked for sponsership money and donations from the rest of the school for brightly coloured powder to be thrown at them as they ran around a course set out around the school grounds. Da iawn, blwyddyn chwech!
BBC Now Concert
Year 5 and 6 were lucky enough to be able to attend a concert at the Strand Hall in Builth Wells. A small group of musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales performed 'Ten Pieces' and talked to the children about the importance of music and how it can change emotions and increase wellbeing. They had a brief lesson in conducting, as well as being shown the four 'families' which make up an orchestra and the instuments within them.
One of our Year 6 girls was even lucky enough to be chosen to go up on stage and conduct the orchestra!
Poetry Workshop
Alex Wharton, the Children's Laureate Wales, came into school to perform some of his poetry and work with Year 5 and 6 to create poems of their own.
They thoroughly enjoyed hearing Alex's poems and asked a lot of very well thought out questions about the ideas behind his books and his inspirations.
During the workshop, Year 5 and 6 spent time perfecting their own poetry, before finally performing to Alex and the rest of the class.
Bad Wolf Studios/Screen Alliance Wales Workshop
We were lucky to have a visit from Rhys who works for Screen Alliance Wales. He came in to deliver a workshop about biomechanics and character creation, showing lots of clips from programmes made by Bad Wolf Studios (such as Doctor Who and His Dark Materials) and breaking them down to explain how the scenes were created. The children learnt all about CGI and animation, as well as the use of physical puppets, before creating their own characters and designing the world they would inhabit. At the end of the workshop, they were able to use animation software to bring life to characters on screen!
Our Spring term 2024 topic was 'Cynefin'.
The Spring Term just flew by! The class were very busy with items for the Eisteddfod.
Here is a small snapshot of what else we were involved with over those few weeks.
Year 6 Science
This half term, we have been investigating light. We found out how the angle of the light source affects the length and definition of the shadow. We also tested the law of reflection, made light mazes and periscopes. During Science Week, we made water clocks and joined the BBC Live Lesson learning about life cycles and metamorphosis.
What have Dosbarth Derw been up to so far this term?
Year 6 Science
Our Science Days have given us the opportunity to take part in some fun investigations! We made bouncy balls and found out how the mass and diameter affects the height of the bounce. We also made toothpaste and tested both the consistency and how well it removed plaque. Our robot hands required a lot of careful measuring, patience and perseverance but our final products were fantastic!
Cymru vote
After reading and watching news reports about whether Wales should be known exclusively as Cymru, we looked at the difference between fact and opinion and at various arguments supporting both sides of the debate. We then held our own class referendum and collated the votes using Excel.
Our Autumn Term 2023 topic was 'Explorers'
Here is a snapshot of what our class learnt during this term.
Karen Davies
Karen is a local explorer who kindly came to talk to us about her upcoming expedition to the Arctic. She and the other women in her team are taking part in the Arctic Blast Expedition to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre Wales. They will be aiming to walk 100 km across the Arctic Circle in just 7 days.
Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic time in Cardiff on their residential trip. Their first day saw them bravely descending into the mine at the Big Pit and learning about Cardiff Bay in a challenging scavenger hunt. The next day, a water taxi ride took them to the Principality Stadium where they were given a fantastic tour. This included sitting in the seats of some very famous rugby players! Following lunch in the castle grounds, they were given a fantastic tour of Cardiff Castle before catching the water taxi back to the Bay. During their final day, everyone had an amazing time trying out the hands-on exhibits at Techniquest. The ice cream before heading home was a lovely way to end their wonderful experience (many thanks to the Friends of Ysgol Y Mynydd Du for this)!
End of term trip to St Fagan's
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
Enquiry, exploration and investigation inspire curiosity about the world, its past, present and future (HWM1) so that I can be knowledgeable about my culture, community, society and the world (EIC)
Year 6 enjoyed their Leavers' celebration.
