Here are a few of the things we've been getting up to in Autumn 2!
Here are a few of the things we got up to in Autumn 1!
Trip to Talgarth Mill
Year 4, 5 and 6 had a fantastic time visiting Talgarth Mill! They enjoyed a guided tour of the Mill and the beautiful cottage garden, learning all about how the Mill operates. The highlight was watching the impressive water wheel in action and discovering how the flour is milled and packaged for sale.
The children also took part in a hands-on baking session with Alex, the Mill’s baker, where they made their own delicious soda bread.
A huge thank you to the staff and volunteers at Talgarth Mill for such a warm welcome and for making the experience so enjoyable and memorable.
Back at school, the pupils put their digital skills to work by creating Adobe Web Pages to showcase what they learned during their visit.
Here are a few of the things we got up to...
Film and Tv Prop Making!
Dosbarth Helyg had a fantastic time in their Screen Alliance Wales workshop!
The session sparked creativity and curiosity as pupils explored real screen-used props, asked thoughtful questions, and worked collaboratively to design and build their own Time Machines. It was an exciting, hands-on experience that brought learning to life!
Grow, Cook, Eat
As part of our Grow, Cook, Eat project with Nature Child, pupils have enjoyed regular gardening sessions during our No-Tech Fridays. We've planted a variety of vegetables and herbs, including carrots and radishes, and had great fun picking and tasting our freshly grown radishes. These hands-on experiences are helping the children learn where their food comes from and develop a real connection with nature.
NSA Sheep Show
Year 3 and 4 had an unforgettable day at the NSA Sheep Show, gaining valuable real-life insights into farming and rural life.
They explored a range of trade stands and learned all about different parts of the agricultural world.
They took part in a cooking workshop where they prepared and tasted delicious lamb meatballs, gaining an understanding of where their food comes from.
A particular highlight was watching the impressive sheepdogs expertly herd sheep and even took part in a fun mock auction, where they were “sold” by McCartneys, giving them a fun and realistic glimpse into the world of livestock trading!
It was a rich, hands-on learning experience that brought the farming world to life in an engaging and memorable way.
VE Day Party
The children have been busy planning a VE Day party as part of their independent learning.
They carried out their own research into life in the 1940s and used their findings to inform every aspect of the celebration. This involved creating playlists of popular wartime music to dance to, planning and costing a menu of appropriate foods and writing instructions for traditional games that children might have played during the era.
They also designed and made bunting to decorate the classroom, helping to create a festive and authentic atmosphere.
Throughout the week, the children worked independently and in pairs, taking responsibility for bringing their plans to life.
It was a fantastic opportunity to develop research, presentation and teamwork skills while deepening their understanding of this important period in history.
Here are a few things we got up to...
Rob Davies Visit
We were lucky enough to have a visit from Paralympic table tennis athlete, Rob Davies! Rob shared his incredible journey, talking about his experiences as a Paralympic champion and how he overcame challenges on his path to success. The children had the opportunity to ask Rob questions and hear all about his successes at the Paralymic Games.
As a special treat, Rob even brought along his gold and silver medals for the children to try on!
Here are a few things we did during the term,
Urdd Workshop
In our workshop, Dosbarth Helyg played games, sang songs and learned dances mostly through the medium of Welsh.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the chance to practise their Welsh and the opportunity to use what they knew in such a fun way.
We all particularly enjoyed singing 'Pen, Ysgwyddau, Coesau, Traed' and challenging ourselves to see how fast we could sing it!
Here are a few things we did during the term!
Dŵr Cymru Workshop
We were lucky enough to have a visit from Dŵr Cymru. They spoke to us about how water gets from rivers and reservoirs, through pipes and treatment plants and out of our taps!
We then had a go at an STEM challenge, creating a route from a reservoir around a town to deliver water to different buildings. We then had to calculate the cost and test our engineering skills!
Growing Cress
In Science and Technology, we took part in a hands-on science investigation where we planted cress seeds and observed how they grew under different conditions. We explored variables such as light, water and temperature to see how each factor influenced the growth of the plants. Over time, we carefully monitored the cress, recording our observations and comparing the results. This activity not only helped us to understand key scientific concepts, but also developed our skills in observation, recording data and drawing conclusions.
Here are a few things Dosbarth Helyg did during the summer term...
Year 6 Fundraising and Colour Run
As always, Year 6 have been working hard to raise money for their Leavers' Day celebrations. They've organised and held a week of sales and games, including a lucky dip and 'sponge the teacher'!
One of the highlights of their fundraising events was the first ever YYMD colour run! They asked for sponsership money and donations from the rest of the school for brightly coloured powder to be thrown at them as they ran around a course set out around the school grounds. Da iawn, blwyddyn chwech!
BBC Now Concert
Year 5 and 6 were lucky enough to be able to attend a concert at the Strand Hall in Builth Wells. A small group of musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales performed 'Ten Pieces' and talked to the children about the importance of music and how it can change emotions and increase wellbeing. They had a brief lesson in conducting, as well as being shown the four 'families' which make up an orchestra and the instuments within them.
One of our Year 6 girls was even lucky enough to be chosen to go up on stage and conduct the orchestra!
Poetry Workshop
Alex Wharton, the Children's Laureate Wales, came into school to perform some of his poetry and work with Year 5 and 6 to create poems of their own.
They thoroughly enjoyed hearing Alex's poems and asked a lot of very well thought out questions about the ideas behind his books and his inspirations.
During the workshop, Year 5 and 6 spent time perfecting their own poetry, before finally performing to Alex and the rest of the class.
Bad Wolf Studios/Screen Alliance Wales Workshop
We were lucky to have a visit from Rhys who works for Screen Alliance Wales. He came in to deliver a workshop about biomechanics and character creation, showing lots of clips from programmes made by Bad Wolf Studios (such as Doctor Who and His Dark Materials) and breaking them down to explain how the scenes were created. The children learnt all about CGI and animation, as well as the use of physical puppets, before creating their own characters and designing the world they would inhabit. At the end of the workshop, they were able to use animation software to bring life to characters on screen!
Here are a few of the things Dosbarth Helyg did during the Spring term...
Year 6 Science
This half term, we have been investigating light. We found out how the angle of the light source affects the length and definition of the shadow. We also tested the law of reflection, made light mazes and periscopes. During Science Week, we made water clocks and joined the BBC Live Lesson learning about life cycles and metamorphosis.
Cymru vote
After reading and watching news reports about whether Wales should be known exclusively as Cymru, we did some work on the difference between fact and opinion and looked at various arguments supporting both sides of the debate. We then held our own referendum and collated the votes using Excel.
Mari Lwyd Posters
The children researched and then used the Posters feature on Adobe Creative Cloud Express to create eye-catching posters showing important information about the Mari Lwyd. They used skills they'd learnt to manipulate text and images to make them as interesting and unique as they could!
Year 6 Science
Our Science Days have given us the opportunity to take part in some fun investigations! We made bouncy balls and found out how the mass and diameter affects the height of the bounce. We also made toothpaste and tested both the consistency and how well it removed plaque. Our robot hands required a lot of careful measuring, patience and perseverance but our final products were fantastic!
A few of the things we did last term...
Cardiff Trip
Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic time in Cardiff on their residential trip. Their first day saw them bravely descending into the mine at the Big Pit and learning about Cardiff Bay in a challenging scavenger hunt. The next day, a water taxi ride took them to the Principality Stadium where they were given a fantastic tour. This included sitting in the seats of some very famous rugby players! Following lunch in the castle grounds, they were given a fantastic tour of Cardiff Castle before catching the water taxi back to the Bay. During their final day, everyone had an amazing time trying out the hands-on exhibits at Techniquest. The ice cream before heading home was a lovely way to end their wonderful experience (many thanks to the Friends of Ysgol Y Mynydd Du for this)!
Karen Davies
Karen is a local explorer who kindly came to talk to us about her upcoming expedition to the Arctic. She and the other women in her team are taking part in the Arctic Blast Expedition to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre Wales. They will be aiming to walk 100 km across the Arctic Circle in just 7 days.
