Year 7
During this academic year, pupils in year 7 have been introduced to a love spoon project. The project involves the research, design and manufacture of a Welsh love spoon. The projects addresses the new curriculum in Wales in several ways, such as enabling pupils to be knowledgeable about their culture, society and the World. Pupils develop a wide range of skills, such as:
Understanding the different categories of woods and their properties
Gaining a deeper understanding of deforestation and its impacts on the environment
Gaining knowledge of the history of Welsh love spoons
Generating, developing and modelling design ideas into a final workable product.
Year 8
Pupils design, develop and manufacture a tea-light holder. In carrying out the project, pupils use a combination of aluminium and wood in their designs. Pupils begin the project by carrying out research, which includes analysing similar products, considering a range of factors such as safety, function and materials used etc. Pupils build on their designing and developing skills gained in year 7, to produce a final workable design. Pupils use a wide range of skills, including numeracy, developing their knowledge of sustainability as well as gaining confidence in using a variety of hand tools and machinery
