For pupils to vary their sentence structure, they need explicit instruction on different types of sentences and how to use them. It is especially important because the syntax of written language is more complex than that of spoken language.
In Year 1, identify statements and questions (orally). Use correct capitalisation and end punctuation (orally).
From Year 2, also identify commands and exclamations, and develop questions about content. Begin to use relevant punctuation according to stage-related Grammar Fundamentals and/or age-related milestones.
From Year 4, differentiate between sentence types. Use correct capitalisation and punctuation according to stage-related Grammar Fundamentals and/or age-related milestones.
