Following the successful George MacBride webinars, looking at assessment and progression in Curriculum for Wales, we are delighted to host the second in our series of webinars, supporting schools to engage with experts. In this workshop, we look at curriculum design. Modern curricula have shifted the emphasis away from detailed specification in policy, to more flexible frameworks requiring interpretation, and local curriculum making by schools and teachers. This comes, of course, with significant challenges in terms of how we conceptualise the curriculum, and how we support its development.
This online 3-hour workshop addresses these issues, drawing where applicable on experiences from other countries that have adopted this approach, especially Scotland. The session includes two presentations by Professor Mark Priestley and time for substantive discussion of the ideas presented.
The session will cover the following:
Consideration of the purposes of education and the big ideas of the curriculum
Different conceptions of curriculum.
Exploration of a process (or purposes-led) approach to curriculum making
Reflections on how we build capacity and the professional agency of teachers to become effective curriculum makers.
Mark Priestley is Professor of Education and the Director of the Stirling Network for Curriculum Studies, an international network set up in 2016 to connect curriculum scholars, policymakers and practitioners. His research interests lie in the school curriculum – theory, policy and practice – and especially the processes of curriculum making across different layers of education systems. Mark advises three national governments (Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) on curriculum matters. He is Lead Editor of the Curriculum Journal and a Co-Convener of the EERA network 3, Curriculum Innovation. His publications include Teacher Agency: An Ecological Approach and Curriculum making in Europe: policy and practice within and across diverse contexts.
Suitable for: Senior leaders or those with responsibility for developing Curriculum for Wales across the school in Welsh and English primary and secondary settings, special schools and PRUs.
Two dates available to choose from: 22nd or 23rd June
Sessions take place between 9.00 and 12.00. All sessions will be delivered in English only. The PowerPoint will be available post-session in Welsh and English.
Schools and settings will receive funding for one day’s cover for up to two leads to attend, and to reflect on the session.
Follow the Eventbrite links to register. Please make sure you include your school name and LA for funding purposes. Please provide your Hwb email address for access to the session.
