At Dŵr y Felin we are always exploring new strategies to improve teaching and learning. As part of our Blended Learning we offered all Year 7 pupils the opportunity to take part in an enquiry to see how the use of digital technology could enhance teaching and learning. Each pupil received a Chromebook and had sole responsibility for this piece of equipment throughout the enquiry. The pupils needed to bring the Chromebook into school each day so that it could be used in their lessons and at home. The enquiry took place after the summer half term and the Chromebooks were issued to each pupil on Thursday 10th June 2021.
1. To assess the impact of issuing Chromebooks to all pupils in Year 7 on teaching and learning.
A total of 26 staff members completed the survey, across 12 departments.
Have you used the Chromebooks with Year 7 this half term in lessons?
· 92% of staff have used the Chromebooks during the trial period.
How often have you used the Chromebooks?
· 8% of staff have used the Chromebooks every lesson
· 23% of staff have used the Chromebooks in the majority of lessons
· 27% of staff have used the Chromebooks in some lessons
· 31% of staff have used the Chromebooks in a few lessons
· 4% of staff have used the Chromebooks in one lesson
· 8% of staff have not used the Chromebooks
58% of staff have used the Chromebooks in some or more lessons
92% of staff have used the Chromebooks in one or more lessons
How has the provision of Chromebooks impacted upon your teaching and learning?
73% of staff considered that the Chromebooks have had a medium or higher impact
50% of staff considered that the Chromebooks have had a high impact
8% of staff considered that the Chromebooks had no impact (Both of these responses where from staff who had not used the Chromebooks and stated this was the reason for saying no impact)
“The pupils all seem to really enjoy having them. When we carried out revision it really helped that they could work independently to complete their own revision at their own level. They seem very confident when using the Chromebook to complete work. It was also very helpful that they could refer back to work already completed on Teams so that work felt important as well to them.”
“All pupils have developed skill and confidence using them, their ICT abilities have improved vastly and they have greater accessibility to learning as a result. I would say that there has been a massive impact on teaching and learning.”
“Allowed pupils to research topics quickly and with ease in terms of organising a 'research lesson'. Has allowed pupils to use these for NRT in the lesson. Has meant pupils can type up their assessments in a quicker and more formal method. For differentiation and MAT it has created more interesting opportunities and tasks for them when waiting for others to complete in mixed ability groupings.”
“Enables pupils to access set tasks online (Teams) and predetermined resources (Stream). Also gives the opportunity for independent research of the topic ready for flipped learning, developing independence and resilience.”
“Pupils have used their chrome books to record discussions on Flip grid which is excellent and gives them more confidence when doing oral work in pairs when they are in control of the recordings. They have also done some research recently and used them for translations”
“The ability to delivery differentiated work and a blend between classwork and homework. Monitor pupil’s progress and progression (Understanding) and effort. The ease of setting work across multiple classes. Use of the Chromebook as a tool to aid teaching and learning.”
30% of staff who responded in the staff voice consider that the issuing of the Chromebooks has impacted positively on Blended teaching, use of Teams, research and testing.

Parent Voice
100% of parents who responded to the questionnaire think the use of Chromebooks has had a positive impact on teaching and learning.
“I find that the use of the Chromebook in class have been a huge help with improving tech skills. She can collaborate with other students for group work more effectively. They have all the information they need to help aid them with their schoolwork. Such a fantastic addition to the working school day “
“They have everything they need in the device. It’s easy to use and all school work is in the same place. Helpful for kids that don’t have laptop devices. It’s a very positive move. With this being digital it’s easier to store work and submit work. Easier for the teacher to mark work not having to have each child’s school book. They have access to find info on the internet. Think it’s a fab idea for all kids to have them. Try to move away from books and paper. Get a good structured filing system by subject and easier to refer back to when revising. Plus easier to read”
“She uses the chrome book in most lessons and finds it easier to complete her work with the Chromebook as opposed to her iPad at home”
“It was a necessary tool during lockdown and it has become a natural part of their schooling both during lessons and at home. It also helps that with the provision of Chromebooks, all pupils have access to the same level of technology.”
“Modern up to date method of working.”
“By using a Chromebook it's great she responsible for it and her own learning. She loves the touchscreen too. Bigger than her own tablet too”
“To be able to access teams from one device at home and school and less time taken from teaching.”
