Welcome to the Dwr Y Felin Live Lesson

What do we want to develop at Dwr y Felin?

Dwr y Felin Blended Learning Vision

What Does the research say?

Teaching quality is more important than how lessons are delivered. Pupils can learn through remote teaching. Ensuring the elements of effective teaching are present – for example clear explanations, scaffolding and feedback – is more important than how or when they are provided. There was no clear difference between teaching in real time (“synchronous teaching”) and alternatives (“asynchronous teaching”). For example, teachers might explain a new idea live or in a pre-recorded video. But what matters most is whether the explanation builds clearly on pupils’ prior learning or how pupils’ understanding is subsequently assessed.”

What are our aims at Dwr y Felin?

Live Lesson Teacher Guidance

Professional Learning

1.  Read the Live Streaming & Video conferencing safeguarding principles and practices.

2.  Teachers should ensure that they keep themselves up-to-date with all relevant policies and procedures, including online safety, safeguarding and data protection policies. These will be hyperlinked regularly on the school blended learning website.

a)  Setting up a meeting in teams

b)  Inviting participants to the meeting

c)  Creating a lobby

d)  The ability to use the record feature in Teams

e)  The ability to mute and unmute participants

f)   The ability to share documents live with others in the meeting

g)  The ability to run the chat in an effective safe manner

h)  The ability to monitor the hands up

i)     The ability to remove participants from the lesson or meeting

j)     How to end the lesson or meeting for all participants

k)  The ability to take a register in Teams

Prior to Live Lessons

1.      Consider if using live teaching benefits teaching and learning for that particular lesson. If not you should adopt an asynchronous approach.

2.      There should be no one-to-one live-streaming lessons with learners.

3.      Live Lessons should be scheduled to mirror teaching timetables but Live Lessons are not full classroom lessons. Top Tip – You could combine two classes together with another member of your department if you are teaching the same lesson at the same time, with one leading and the other supporting the chat.

4.      Ensure that all the necessary technology (Camera & Microphone) that you need is working before starting the session. There is a test call feature in the settings of teams. Tip – Gain confidence by becoming familiar with the meeting functions in Microsoft Teams by practising with your department. Staff should use school devices to deliver a Live Lesson in a suitable location which maintains safeguarding for all. The lesson must be delivered through HWB using Microsoft Teams.

5.      You will need to calendar the meeting through teams at least a day before the session and inform pupils also using Microsoft Teams.

6.      The lesson should be a maximum of 15 minutes teacher-led introduction (Including lesson hook & lesson objectives). Pupils should then undertake extended activities and submit their work through a Microsoft Teams assignment. This section of the lesson need not be live.

7.  Staff need to make all of the learners ‘attendees’ and not ‘presenters’. If you ask a learner to share their screen and any work that they do, make them presenters. After they have shown work, etc., change them back to attendees. This helps to control the lesson.

8.      Pupils must have signed the Dwr y Felin Live Learning Pupil Agreement in order for them to be invited to a Live Lesson. (See SIMS Marksheet)

9.      All resources for the Live Lesson should be uploaded on Teams prior to the lesson and stored in their assignments or files. Pupils should be made aware of these resources prior to the lesson, in order to activate prior learning.

10.  Join the meeting a minimum of 5 minutes before the start to welcome the pupils and give time for connections to be established. Top tip – Use the lobby feature to stop pupils joining the meeting without you present.

11.  Teachers will notify of changes to Live Lesson arrangements through Microsoft Teams.

During Live Lessons

1.      Staff must make pupils aware that the session will be recorded and start recording as soon as you join the meeting. Recordings must be taken in every lesson for safeguarding of both pupils and staff.

2.      Teacher need to discuss roles and responsibilities with learners at the outset of all lessons. Present the PowerPoint slide on the expectations of pupils during Live Lessons.

3.      Remind the pupils that their microphone must be switched off when entering the Live Lesson and can be activated when instructed by the class teacher.

4.      Pupils should be reminded to use the Hands Up feature and wait to be invited to contribute by the class teacher.

5.      All communications during Live Lessons can be undertaken via either the microphone or chat tool, but pupils must use the Hands up tool and wait to be invited to contribute to the class discussion by the teacher.

6.      Staff should remind pupils to contribute to the lesson in a positive manner.

7.      Pupils who are disruptive during a Live Lesson should be removed by the class teacher.

8.      Pupils must be reminded not to share any images or materials of the lesson with anybody.

End of Live Lessons

1.      Teachers set relevant asynchronous activities linked to the Live Lesson content.

2.      Pupils informed of assignments and reminded to upload or submit work.

3.      Teachers prevent a one-to-one situation at the end of an online class by disconnecting all participants from Teams at the close of the lesson.

Live Lesson PLC

Live Lesson PLC - Aims

The live lessons PLC has been created to bring together teachers across the AOLE's to develop a whole school evidence informed strategy for delivering synchronous lessons at Dwr y Felin.

On September 25th 2020, the PLC delivered professional learning by hosting live lessons involving all teaching staff. Below are a set of links for the lessons which you can review to help you develop ideas of how you can deliver effective live lessons.

Lesson & SOW planning

The lesson map above can be used to help you structure your Remote Learning sessions.

The guidance section touches upon what the research suggested should be developed in the different elements of the session.

The structure sessions suggests pedagogy that can be deployed in the session.

The toolkit are the different applications and activities you can use with your pupils during the session. These will be built into this page.

This document underlines the elements that make up Blended Learning at Dwr Y Felin school. These are:

Planning Documents

Planning document to help break down the elements of your existing SOW for use in a Blended Learning enviroment.
