What do we want to develop at Dwr y Felin?
Dwr y Felin Blended Learning Vision
What Does the research say?
“Teaching quality is more important than how lessons are delivered. Pupils can learn through remote teaching. Ensuring the elements of effective teaching are present – for example clear explanations, scaffolding and feedback – is more important than how or when they are provided. There was no clear difference between teaching in real time (“synchronous teaching”) and alternatives (“asynchronous teaching”). For example, teachers might explain a new idea live or in a pre-recorded video. But what matters most is whether the explanation builds clearly on pupils’ prior learning or how pupils’ understanding is subsequently assessed.”

Starters
Using session preparation slides
When pupils are working at home remotely, they are usually in a completely different environment from that which they would be used to in school. Giving the pupils session preparation instructions can help them get the most out of their remote learning time.
Pros
Clearly sets out to the pupils what they can do to manage their working environment.
Challenges
The instructions may have to be altered dependent on the task you would like them to undertake.

Main Tasks
Microsoft teams can be used to facilitate groupwork by creating channels that can only be accessed by particular members of the class. This creates a space where they can interact and collaborate in the teams and can be supervised by the teacher. Click the title to see a handy guide made by Mrs K Davies.
Top Tip - Make sure to use private channels so other pupils can't enter the channel
Pros
Facilitate group work remotely.
You can track progress as the teacher by asking the pupils to use the files section provided.
Cons
Not as personal as face to face interactions.

Microsoft Forms
Microsoft Forms is an excellent tool available in Office 365 to enable teachers to create opportunities for AfL and AoL for their learners. This can be in the form of a Quiz that can
Top Tip - Make sure to use the quiz assignment in Microsoft Teams for quiz scores to sync with the grades tab in your class teams.
Pros
Microsoft Forms can auto-mark multiple choice questions from pupils and assign them a mark.
Forms can be re-used with a number of different classes over time so they have a great return on time investment.
You can set automatic feedback depending upon the choices that pupils make in the quiz.
Cons
Forms cannot auto-mark.
Dependent on your internet bandwidth, the video may take a while to upload.

Microsoft Forms can be used not just for summative testing but for finding out how your learners feel they are progressing in both remote and face to face sessions. Setting up a pupil feedback form uses the New Form feature in Microsoft Forms where you can then create a range of questions for the pupils to answer.
Top Tips -
It is possible to link your form to appear as a specific point in your Microsoft Stream video for pupils to access. Click the link in the title or here for a guide of how to do so created by Annie Hughes.
Ensure that you use the option to record names dependent on whether you would like anonymous feedback or not.
Pros
Once created you can duplicate the feedback form for use with multiple classes. This means that they can also be shared within your department.
The responses are automatically analysed creating graphs of quantitative data collected.
The forms can be used in both an academic and pastoral context.
Cons
Initial time taken to create the forms.
Flipgrid
Flipgrid is an excellent platform for getting the learners to create a video response to a questions posed by the teachers. Ideally, the pupils will use their smartphone to record their video and upload it to the Flipgrid platform.
Top Tip - Make sure that you add the @hwbmail.net and @hwbcymru.net domains to your grid for the pupils to have access.
Pros
If you enable the moderation feature, the videos created will not be posted to the grid until they have been reviewed.
Allows the pupils to use and develop their oracy and presentation skill across a range of subjects.
Pupils and teachers can use the Flipgrid features to customise their video, including blackboards and emojis to obscure their face if desired.
Cons
Permissions need to be set appropriately for pupils to view the video.
Dependent on your internet bandwidth, the video may take a while to upload.
