Introduction

The Skills Baccalaureate is an exciting new Level 3 qualification which helps learners to become effective, responsible, and active citizens who are ready to take their place in a sustainable global society and the workplace.

The Advanced Welsh Skills Baccalaureate is an innovative qualification that encourages learning within and outside of the classroom, giving learners opportunities to choose their own areas of study as they develop their Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Creativity and Innovation skills. Building on their skills from GCSE, the qualification helps learners to develop skills and attributes and offers experiences that enables them to better prepare for their future, whether in higher education, apprenticeships, training, or employment.

By undertaking the qualification learners will not only develop academically but also personally by gaining various opportunities to develop their initiative, independence and resilience.

Course Content

The qualification is divided into three Projects designed to ensure that learners can exercise autonomy and personal choice when selecting areas of study that interest them or are relevant to their future paths. All learners must complete three compulsory projects which will enable them to consider their own well-being and the well-being of others. The qualification is non-examination and learners are assessed on the coursework which is presented throughout the two years.

Year 12

The Global Community Project supports learners to learn about complex global issues and take part in community action to promote citizenship in a sustainable world and in Wales. Learners are expected to participate in voluntary hours to succeed in this project. The project corresponds to 25% of the qualification.

The Future Destinations Project supports learners to develop and demonstrate that they can apply their skills whilst exploring goals for future life, employability, and citizenship. The project corresponds to 25% of the qualification.

Year 13

The Individual Project is an opportunity for learners to plan, manage and carry out a written independent research project of their choice. The project gives an invaluable taster into the requirements of further education study. The project corresponds to 50% of the qualification.

Entry Requirements

There are no prior learning requirements for the qualification. The qualification is statutory for all learners returning to the sixth form and is a follow-up to the GCSE Skills Challenge.

Career Prospects

This qualification acts as a suitable foundation for studying a range of higher education courses, progressing to the next level of vocational qualifications or employment. The qualification is now recognised by the majority of universities across the UK and is accepted by many as the third A Level to ensure access to a Higher education course.
