Sixth Form Resources

The sixth form students have a block of newly renovated rooms which and dedicated to research, studying, revision and working independently in free periods.

Students will have a choice of the common room to relax, socialise and work with others in groups; the library as a quiet environment to work independently and revise; the work room where there are computers for the exclusive use of the sixth form; and a coffee shop which serves a variety of drinks and snacks throughout the day for the use of the sixth form only.

Sixth Form Courses

In order to study in the Sixth Form students will be expected to have achieved grades A* to C in 5 GCSE or BTEC courses. If the student has not succeeded in doing this, the head teacher's permission must be obtained before returning, and an attempt will be made to ensure a suitable study program for the individual. Year 12 / AS units will need to be passed with grades A-E before being allowed to move on to study A2.

Traditionally learners choose up to 4 A Level / Vocational subjects in year 12 before reducing to 3 subjects in year 13.

As part of the options we provide traditional A Level courses as well as vocational courses. A summary of them can be seen below:

A Level Courses

The school has a wide range of A Level subjects. These subjects are mainly assessed through external examinations at the end of year 12 and 13.

A list of the subjects can be seen here by following the 'Courses' link above.

Vocational Courses

We also provide a range of vocational courses which place an emphasis on coursework rather than formal exams. These courses are assessed through coursework over the 2 years as well as an external examination which is usually taken at the end of year 12.

These courses are suitable for learners who enjoy the challenge of research work and creating a portfolio rather than formal exams.

At the end of your period studying a BTEC course you will receive a Level 3 qualification which is equivalent to Level A. These courses are graded slightly differently to Level A courses where you will receive;

  • Distinction* - Which is equivalent to a A*

  • Distinction - Which is equivalent to an A

  • Merit - Which is equivalent to a C

  • Pass - Which is equivalent to an E

Financial Support

There will be an opportunity for any member of the Sixth Form to apply to receive Education Maintenance Allowance, (ECA).

Those who are eligible will receive:

  • Learning agreement to be signed.

  • Money that goes straight to the bank account every two weeks.

  • Students will have to maintain good standards of progress in the subjects and a high level of attendance in order to keep receiving the allowance.

Monitoring Progress

Contact with home is important to us here at the school, and as a result each student will be monitored very closely to ensure that they are working to their potential.

This will include:

  • departmental monitoring

  • interim and annual report

  • parents' evening

Help will be available for those who are finding any aspect of the work difficult through individual mentoring sessions.
