Introduction

The course includes a combination of practical and theory assessments. There will be an opportunity during the two years to improve your personal performance, train peers and younger pupils of the school and manage groups and teams.


We learn about the relationship between lifestyles, health and fitness within the context of practical activities. There is an opportunity to attend visits to universities specialising in Physical Education and sports in addition to extracurricular opportunities such as team competitions, collaboration and organising school sports and various courses.

Advanced Subsidiary (AS)

Year 12


PE 1 - Unit 1

Examining physical education

  • Written examination 1 3/4 hours

  • 24% of the qualification (72 marks)

  • Assess all AS content of the subject

Content to include;

  • multiple choice questions, responding to data, short answers and extended writing.


PE2 - Unit 2


Improving Personal Performance in physical education


  • Non-exam assessment

  • 16% of the qualification (48 marks)

  • Assess practical performance in one activity as a player/performance as a coach or referee and a personal performance profile



Advanced Level (A2)

Year 13


PE 3 - Unit 3

Evaluating physical education

  • 2 hour written examination

  • 36% of the qualification (90 marks)

  • Assess all A level content of the subject

A range of questions to include;

  • responding to data, short answers and extended writing.

PE4 - Unit 4

Refinement of personal performance in physical education


  • Non-examination assessment

  • 24% of the qualification (60 marks)

  • Assess practical performance in one activity as a player/performer.

  • Investigative Research.


Career Prospects

  • Develop and refine physical ability in different situations as a performer, coach and administrator.

  • Integrating theory with the practical elements of Physical Education.

  • Develop participation in physical activities for long term life as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.


Entry Requirements

Although individual consideration will be given to each learner, it would be beneficial if they had at least a grade B in GCSE Physical Education and Science.
