Introduction

Medical Science is a vocational course that prepares learners with the scientific and practical knowledge and skills for working in the healthcare world and related fields e.g. nursing, health care, physiotherapy, medical research, paramedical. The two year course will lead to a WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Medical Science.

Course Content

Units

Unit 1 – Human health and disease

You will learn about the body's systems and how they work together, and develop your knowledge of important biochemical processes and structures.

End of year external examination 12 – 25%


Unit 2 – Physiological measurement techniques

You will develop the necessary skills for carrying out physiological tests on patients (e.g. measuring blood pressure) and understand the significance of the results for them. You will learn how to treat patients and explain the results of certain tests to them.

Internal assessment – ​​Coursework (Term 1/2) – 12.5%


Unit 3 – Medical science research methods

You will develop the skills required for conducting medical science research, including planning and carrying out questionnaires, collecting and analysing data statistically. You will also need to prepare a presentation as part of your research project.

Internal assessment – ​​Research Project (Term 2) – 12.5%


Unit 4 – Medicines and treatment of diseases

You will learn and investigate different types of medicines and how they affect and work together with the body's systems, and modern methods of cancer treatment. You will prepare and present individual work and as part of a team through this unit.

Internal assessment – ​​Coursework (Term 4/5)) – 25%


Unit 5 – Clinical laboratory techniques

You will learn how to carry out some simple biochemical and microbiological tests within the laboratory, and develop an understanding of how medical laboratory methods support the process of giving a diagnosis for different diseases. We hope to be able to arrange a visit to a local hospital to support this.

External assessment – ​​practical and written examination (Term 4/5) – 12.5%


Unit 6 – Medical case study

This unit is a synoptic assessment of the content of the entire course, based on three medical case studies, which is released a month before the final exam. We will spend considerable time preparing for this after finishing the theory work.

Final exam 12.5%


Career Prospects

Students could progress on to an apprenticeship or employment in a career area such as medical research or sports therapy, or may continue in higher education after which job prospects could include becoming a nurse or physiotherapist.

Entry Requirements

Although individual consideration will be given to each application to study the subject, it would be beneficial if they had at least a CC grade in GCSE Dual Science, and a C grade in mathematics (Intermediate Tier).
