Year 2 - Cousteau Class

This term Year 2 has shown that they can be Principled in their learning and have developed their thinking and communication Approaches to Learning.

Maths

This term the children have developed and consolidated their understanding of word problems by focusing on the four number operations. They have solved one and two step problems for all operations and in a number of contexts such as money and length. We have made connections to our previous learning on number bonds and number facts for multiplication and division.

We have also explored time, a subject that many children do find difficult. We have recapped previous Yr 1 learning of o’clock and half past and then built upon this with quarter to, quarter past and then moved onto telling the time every five minutes.

Next term, we will continue to develop our number skills whilst also looking at mass and capacity whilst also reflecting back on our work on fractions, an area that many of the children found challenging.

Inquiry

This term we have explored the impact Queen Victoria and the Victorian era had on the lives of people then and to this day. When thought about the impact of the growth and impact of the British Empire not only here in England but around the world. We have considered the inequalities in society for women, children and the poor and how there was a need for change. The children made links between equalities that still exist today around the world and made links to our previous work in Term 1.

As part of their actions, the children suggested what we could do around our school to improve our educational opportunities for all of the children, some of their ideas were then shared with members of the school teaching staff who lead in the areas highlighted by the children.

Along with the rest of school, Climate Change day provided the children with the opportunity to consider our actions and how we can help to make a change and improve the local community and the world we live in.

Reading Rainbow

We have been reading the story of Oliver Twist this term and thinking about the actions of Fagin and Nancy and the impact they had on Oliver. Children developed their inference skills by considering their actions and using the text to justify their answers. The children were able to make links to the life chances of Oliver to our work in the inequalities of the lives of children in our Inquiry sessions.

Queen’s Jubilee

It was great to see the wide range of outfits that appeared in school on Friday as part of our 70’s theme. The children researched Queen Elizabeth and her Silver Jubilee which was celebrated in 1977. As part of our build up to the Queen’s Jubilee, the children also enjoyed reading the story of the Queen’s Knickers and using this as the starting point for their own stories about the queen. We compared this to another queen story that we had read during our KS1 story assembly to help us make links between books with a similar theme.
