Year 1 - Berners-Lee Class

Climate Change Day

Term 5

It’s been another busy term! There has been so much learning that has taken place, a special visit to London and two celebration days: Climate Change Day and Jubilee Day. The children have earned a well deserved rest.

Central idea: Structures are connected to the environment.

1) An inquiry into different materials used in construction.

The children researched the properties of materials and then learnt about different types of materials used in constructions in the local area, within England and around the world. They used this scientific word mat to describe the different building materials.

Here are the texts that are linked to line of inquiry 1.

Week 2

2) An inquiry into how the environment has an impact on buildings and their design.

The children learnt about hot and cold countries around the world. They researched the different climates and how this impacted on building design. They recognised that homes adapted to the climates.

Following on from this, the children researched the common types of homes and houses, in their local area.

3) An inquiry into how materials change when people interact with them.

This line of inquiry encouraged the children to explore and test their ideas through scientific inquiries. They tested different materials to see how they changed when people interacted with them. They also worked in teams to build a bridge for either people or transport. This enabled them to test their ideas whilst working collaboratively.

Here are the texts that supported line of inquiry 3.

Maths skills:

This term, the children developed lots of different maths skills:

Multiplication and division - 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
