In April our library circulated 231 physical books. In May we circulated 200 physical books.
Our Sora statistics were very impressive. Our shared digital collection with the middle school library saw the following usage:
April
e-books: 746 checkouts
Audiobooks: 158 checkouts
Magazines: 69 checkouts
May
e-books: 881 checkouts
Audiobooks: 138 checkouts
Magazines: 54 checkouts
The 2022-23 school year saw significant growth in library book checkouts for students at HHS. The trend in readership is swinging in a very positive direction. During this school year the media center loaned:
2,400 physical library books
8,176 ebooks (Sora)
1,810 audiobooks (Sora)
1,202 magazines (Sora)
A study of the age of the materials in our library collection shows that the vast majority of our resources are less than 13 years old. We continually add the newest award-winning titles to our library while retaining a robust collection of classics.
The high school media center contains 13,511 total resources. The total value of this collection is $258,429.33. The average price per item is $16.23.
The media center has been a flurry of activity in 2022-23. We hosted over 150 distinct class visits this school year. Teachers took advantage of the wide spaces on the main floor, as well as the Instructional Space and the Digital Den.
The Instructional Space can host an entire class and includes moveable furniture, dry-erase walls, and an AV system with a computer, speakers, Apple TV, and projector. The Digital Den offers 14 Mac computers with iMovie and Adobe Creative Cloud software, as well as a green screen and video production equipment.
Teachers can reserve these rooms by booking them on Google Calendar. Here are instructions.
The media center is excited to offer its second year of summer book checkouts. Students were encouraged to grab a handful of books to borrow until August. As of May 31, we circulated over 50 library books for summer reading.
Although the physical library closes each summer, the Sora digital library remains open 24/7 everyday. Staff and students are encouraged to borrow ebooks and audiobooks over the summer by visiting Sora and signing in with their Hudson Google accounts. Books can be accessed on mobile devices and computers; they sync across everything as you read or listen. Audiobooks are particularly good for road trips!
I recently installed a nifty extension called Library Extension on my Google Chrome browser, which allows me to see if a book is available at my local library whenever searching a title in Amazon or Goodreads. After you install the extension, you can go into its settings and add a local library. You can include search results for electronic books as well, including Overdrive (Libby) and Hoopla.
You can see in the image below that I searched for Hunger Games on Amazon. In the right panel, I can see availability at Hudson Library and Historical Society. I can immediately borrow the book or place a hold on it. Pretty rad!
