The new media center Explorer Room has been making a positive difference for our students and staff. It is used daily as a quiet location for:
Prayer
Meditation
Club meetings
Decompression
Quiet study
Quiet lunch assignments
Interviews
Audio recordings for class projects
Please contact the media center if you have an idea for using the Explorer Room.
The Explorer Room is a quiet and peaceful place for students to decompress, as well as conduct interviews, make recordings, study, or read.
The iPad offers powerful accessibility features for users of all abilities. Additionally, users can use the Shortcuts app to program their iPad to recognize and respond to specific conditions, such as concentration issues. Once you provide the Shortcuts app your accessibility options, it will generate a guide of suggested automations that you can set up to make your workflow more personalized.
More information about using the Accessibility Assistant Shortcut can be found in the Tech Learning Collective newsletter.
In November the media center celebrated Native American Heritage Month. Dr. Griffiths curated amazing book displays that showcased titles written by Native American authors.
The media center also offers many digital resources about Native Americans, including an impressive collection on Newsela, How To Celebrate National Native American Heritage Month in the Classroom. This collection includes resources for Social Studies, ELA, and Science.
The media center subscribes to the digital version of the New York Times. Staff and students are invited to create digital passes to provide access to all of the daily articles. Creating a digital pass is easy. From there, staff and students can read articles in their web browser or on personal devices using the New York Times app.
Create a digital pass to the NY Times
Please contact Mr. Robitaille if you need assistance creating digital passes for yourself or your students.
As students and staff make videos on their iPads for demonstrations and projects, they often struggle with how to share these videos with others. By nature videos are large files, which cannot be emailed. Fortunately, you have other options for sending videos. You can use an iCloud link, Google Drive, or YouTube. The tutorial video here demonstrates how to share videos created on iPads.
Throughout the media center users will find book recommendations made by students. We would love to see more staff book recommendations as well! If you have a good Young Adult book that you want to promote to our students, we will proudly display it on the shelf with the title. You can fill out a paper recommendation form in the media center or quickly fill out this digital book recommendation form.
Thank you for sharing the love of reading!
Rather than emailing a weekly tech tip, this year I am going to gather educational technology resources in a social bookmarking site called Wakelet. As I stumble upon great resources, I will add them to my Wakelet account.
I've divided the resources into subject categories, as well as resources for iPads, artificial intelligence, and a catch-all category called Great online resources for all. My Wakelet account is young, but I intend to expand it significantly as the year progresses. I encourage you to follow the link to my Wakelet page and then bookmark it so you can keep updated on new resources as I add them.
