OUR VISION
The Science Department envisions igniting a passion for science among students, cultivating a deep understanding of the natural world. This vision is dedicated to inspiring and engaging students in the wonder and complexity of scientific inquiry.
OUR MISSION
The Science Department's mission is to provide a stimulating and enriching learning environment. They are committed to fostering critical thinking and nurturing the next generation of scientifically literate individuals, preparing them for a future in a science-driven world.
OUR APPROACH
The department uses the Inquiry-based learning approach to teaching Science. This is aligned to MOE’s Primary Science Syllabus and our school’s vision. Students are taken through the 3C Pedagogical Framework- Capture-Construct-Consolidation, as they discover and reinforce the learning of Science concepts. We provide opportunities to stimulate curiosity in students to explore within and outside the classroom through:
1. Laboratory Sessions
2. Learning Journeys / Enrichment Programs
3. Interdisciplinary Project work
4. Use of ICT
5. Participation in external competitions e.g. Science Olympiad, Singapore Youth Science Fair
6. Environment Education
THE HOLISTIC APPROACH
A range of assessment tools, including written and performance tasks are used to provide feedback to the students on their mastery of concepts and skills as well as their strengths and areas for improvement. The various modes of assessment include:
• Weighted Assessments & End-of-Year Examination • Formative assessment during lessons
• Interdisciplinary Project Work
• Online tests and quizzes
LEVEL PROGRAMMES & LEARNING JOURNEY
P3 Mushroom Workshop
Aligned with the Primary 3 Science curriculum on fungi and bacteria, this experiential workshop provides students with authentic learning opportunities to explore the characteristics and growth of mushrooms. Students will also bring home a mushroom cultivation kit to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
P4 Light Periscope Workshop
In support of students’ learning on the topic of light, this workshop introduces the scientific principles behind how a periscope functions. Students will apply their conceptual understanding by constructing a working periscope, which they can take home.
P6 Learning Journey to River Wonders
This learning journey to River Wonders is designed to deepen students’ understanding of animal adaptations in diverse habitats. Through direct observation and guided learning experiences, students will gain meaningful insights into how animals are adapted to survive in their environments.
Biodiversity Week
Biodiversity Week features a series of engaging recess activities that allow students to observe and interact with live animals such as birds and frogs. These experiences aim to foster curiosity, deepen knowledge, and promote an appreciation for biodiversity and conservation.
SPARK Award Activities
Boat Race
Building on their learning from the topic on Materials, students will design and construct boats using recyclable materials. The activity culminates in a boat race, providing an authentic platform for students to apply scientific concepts, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Magnet Toy
Drawing on their understanding of magnets, students will design and create a functional magnet toy. The project concludes with a Magnet Toy Exhibition, where students present and articulate their designs to peers from other classes.
Shadow Puppet Play
Integrating scientific concepts from the topic of light, students will design shadow puppets and develop original storylines. They will then present a shadow puppet performance to their class, demonstrating their understanding through creative expression and collaborative learning.
