Reading Programme
The SOAR reading programme was introduced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2025 to instill a love for reading in students’ Mother Tongue Language (MTL). SOAR stands for :
· Spark interest
· Open minds
· Appreciate cultural roots
· Rise as a bilingual reader
Under this programme, 30 minutes of weekly MTL lesson time is dedicated to students to be actively engaged in reading and related activities. With the SOAR programme, MOE hopes to strengthen efforts to instill in students a love for reading in MTL and to cultivate a positive set of reading dispositions and habits from a young age by making reading manageable, visible, and fun for them. The main aim is to foster a love for reading in MTL and to eventually develop lifelong reading habits among students.
In the Malay Language department, the SOAR programme engages students in Malay literature through activities such as reading, library visits, class sharing, and story reenactment. Understanding the value of school-home partnership, through take home activities, parents are also involved in exposing students to a wide variety of Malay literature.

Mother Tongue Fortnight (MTF) is an annual two-week programme dedicated to promoting the appreciation of students’ Mother Tongue languages. In 2025, the programme was held in Term 3, with enthusiastic participation from all Malay students. In Week 1, students explored the theme “Kampung Life.” They engaged in a variety of hands-on cultural activities such as mini kampung house painting, traditional games, batik painting, kompang sessions, and 3D kampung model-making. These experiences allowed students to gain a deeper appreciation of the simplicity, creativity, and strong community spirit of traditional village life.
Week 2 highlighted students’ talents through a Malay poetry competition featuring singing, recitation, and storytelling. This platform enabled students to build confidence, enhance their language proficiency, and express themselves creatively in the Malay language.
Overall, the programme enriched students’ learning experiences, strengthened their language skills, and deepened their appreciation of their cultural heritage.
Learning Journey to Singapore Zoo
As part of the school’s efforts to foster students’ interest in learning their Mother Tongue Language, Primary 2 students participated in a learning journey to the Singapore Zoo. The learning journey provided students with an authentic experience, allowing them to observe animals in naturalistic habitats and deepen their understanding of animals using their Mother Tongue languages.
Following the trip, students engaged in classroom sharing sessions with their classmates. They confidently shared their experiences, described animals in Malay language and expressed their thoughts using newly acquired vocabulary. This meaningful experience reinforced their language skills while building their confidence in speaking the Malay language.
Hari Raya Celebration
Students and staff of Huamin Primary School came together for a yearly joyful celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The festivities included a week-long exhibition featuring traditional food and costumes, offering students a glimpse into the rich Malay cultural heritage.
Everyone basked in the festive spirit and was thrilled by the array of delightful performances, namely the silat, dance and sing-along performances put up by our talented students and teachers. Through engaging activities such as an interactive quiz, Huaminites further deepened their understanding and appreciation of the cultural significance of the celebration.
