Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. In May, students submit portfolios based on specific criteria , which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision, guided by questions. Students may choose to submit the AP Portfolio Exam.

The AP 2-D Art and Design course is designed to be the equivalent of a one-semester, introductory college course in 2-D art and design. The AP Program works cooperatively with high school teachers and students to complete a college level course and permits colleges to evaluate, acknowledge, and encourage that accomplishment through appropriate credit and placement.
