Should i buy an instrument?
Quality matters and suitable instruments for beginners generally cost in the range of $800-$1,200. Using one of the rent to own programs from our vendors helps divide this cost into manageable monthly payments, makes sure that all of the supplies you need are included, and allows our staff to get your instrument repaired for normal wear and tear for free. Our staff does not recommend that you buy an instrument for beginning players because of these rental advantages. If you choose to purchase an instrument, please consider:

*This list is by no means exclusive. These are just some of the online and physical stores that sell some of the suggested brands.
Please feel free to contact our staff if you need specific model suggestions. You will also need to purchase supplies if you buy an instrument on your own. Please see the supply list below so that your child comes to school ready to play in September.
Things to consider if you are thinking about buying your instrument instead of renting it through our cooperating vendors:
Families sometimes see a low price on an instrument at places like Sams Club, Walmart, etc. and think it is a great deal. Why spend a thousand dollars? These $150 instruments must be just as good, right?
Low price instruments such as these are made from a thinner metal. Often, they cannot be tuned to match the group and are made from a cheaper material that can make them non-repairable when they break.
If you rent, the vendor will handle repairs on your instrument for free in most cases and will usually supply a loaner while the instrument is repairs. This is not an option if you own.
Internet purchases are also very risk as with anything from the web. Sellers on sites like eBay or Craigslist often sell you items sight unseen or post misleading pictures. You won't have the chance to see if it will even make a sound before you buy.
String instruments change sizes as your child grows. Our rental vendors will trade sizes as needed. If you own a string instrument, you will need to buy one every time your child needs to move up sizes.
String instruments come in scaled sizes. Click here for a brief guide on what size your child will need.
Our staff may also recommend that a student switch instruments to help the sound of the ensemble. Renting allows for an easy exchange with a vendor whereas buying does not.
