First Lady and advocate
Because she raised awareness and practiced fairness.
Michelle Obama is an advocate who pushed past racial barriers and helped people all around the world. She was the first lady from 2008 to 2017, and was the first African American woman to serve in this position. She opened many businesses and started important programs that helped influence others throughout the globe. She helped children learn about the food that they consume and helped them learn to live a prosperous life. Michelle Obama helped people in crisis, paved the way for future women in politics, and still has a lasting effect on people today.
Michelle Obama has helped many people around the U.S. with their crises. In 2013, she helped 60,000 veterans that were going to go homeless and under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program (“Oklahoma”). Michelle Obama was able to help other people around the U.S. Veterans go through so much, so Michelle started this program to do all that she could to help the struggling families. Michelle’s influence over the country shows that she is able to make changes and send help where it is needed. She also helped kids that could not afford school lunches. This was shown, “In 2010 she passed The School Lunch program with bipartisan support. The program provides free and reduced-price meals to more than 21 million low-income children now requires districts to serve more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy products” (Ellise). Michelle not wanted to help with children’s nutrition, but also families who are struggling. She ensured that the lunches that were being given at school were healthy and full of nutrients and not processed. She also made sure that families who were unable to provide their kids lunches because of insufficient funds, were still given the opportunity to eat with free meals. This shows how Michelle Obama helped many families who are struggling in different ways. Michelle’s most famous organization is the Let’s Move! Project. It started, “In 2010, she launched Let’s Move!, bringing together community leaders, educators, medical professionals, parents, and others in a nationwide effort to address the challenge of childhood obesity”(Ellise). This shows how Michelle Obama wanted people to become aware of the growing childhood obesity crisis. She brought together many people to talk about the issue and explain that we need to make a change. Her corporation that she launched encouraged many to learn about the obesity problem and act on it to stop the growth. Michelle wanted to make the children healthier, and allow them to live better lives in the future. All in all, Mrs. Obama aided people in poverty and changed the nutrition and physical activity of children around the United States.
Since she was the first black first lady, she paved the way for both black and white women in politics. Michelle is a very smart lady and received, “...her law degree from Harvard Law School. Following graduation, she was hired by the Chicago corporate-law firm of Sidley & Austin, where she specialized in entertainment law, and was ultimately assigned as advisor to summer associate Barack Obama” (First). This evidence shows that Michelle wasn't just a wife to the president. She worked just as hard as anyone else, if not harder to get to the point where she is now. She attended Harvard which is an Ivy League school. Ivy League school requires a lot of dedication and true intelligence. Many people think of her as less, but she really has a lot of experience. The president of the United States agrees that she is an amazing woman. Joe Biden says to Michelle, “‘You embody dignity beyond measure, Michelle. And together, you and Barack made history. You both generated hope for millions of people who were left behind for so long. And it matters. You both did it with such grace and such class'” (“Remarks”). This shows how the president, Joe Biden, spoke highly of Michelle. The president has such a high role of authority, so by him saying this, shows that she really goes out of her way to benefit the US in the best way possible. He claims that she “made history,” which is a very strong statement to make, but he stood behind it. There is no hesitation, and he describes how she reached success. Not only did she work hard her entire life to get where she is now, but she continues to stay humble while growing her dominance. Michelle Obama encourages countries around the world to educate and help young women flourish, and she speaks out about stories and her struggles to influence the young girls to stick with their education (Ellise). Michelle wanted to encourage young women to break the stereotypes and do what they want. She is helping the youth of our nation by creating a pathway for success by mentoring them, instead of not helping them at all. She uses her resources to find ways for girls to get the proper education that they deserve. By setting a good example now, she strives to create and guide young girls who will grow up to become beautiful, smart, and kind women in the future. Overall, Michelle Obama changed the way women view politics and the racial injustices it comes with.
Michelle Obama was not only important when she was the first lady, but is also very important to today's life. During the lockdown, “An important part of Obama’s self-care message was not only finding an outlet, but also managing fear, which was crucial for navigating COVID lockdowns and when she started writing the book. Pandemic or not, the message to not let fear lead the way reverberates”(Russell). This is saying how even though Michelle Obama is not the First Lady today, she still has influence on the world around us. She wanted to help people during the lockdown when people were panicking, and to calm them down and ensure them that they were safe. She still helps people around the United States with her book that people can still read. She wanted to keep helping others even if she was not. Since Michelle wanted to be healthier, she made a garden at the White House again. This led to the book she wrote about the garden and to help gardeners around the U.S. This book was called, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, in 2012 (First). Michelle has made such an impact on people in the US, that she made her own book to continue the legacy. People are now able to read her story, and it will always be spread. This will reach other audiences. Not only will people be influenced by her role on social media, but her experiences can now be shared on another platform. “Obama offers a hopeful message, as she did in her first book, Becoming. This time she talks about using the pandemic as a time to jump into radical self-care” (Russell). Michelle Obama's books have impacted many people because of the message that it portrays. She shares her life stories, which can be very vulnerable, sharing the good and the bad. While going into detail, people are able to relate to her on a deeper level, because she seems like a normal person who has real struggles just like them. It also shows how it is okay to express emotions. In today's life, average people tend to compare themselves to famous and influential people. Michelle Obama has contributed so much to the world around us and these impacts stay with society even today.
Michelle Obama is an important figure to the U.S. and helped others when it was needed most. She used her voice and position to influence the diets of children and help homeless people throughout the United States. Even after leaving her position as the First Lady, she still had an impact on others and had a voice to speak out. Michelle Obama was not a typical first lady, and pushed her way through all of the fame to help those who really need it.
