Spatial Design + Presentation Design = one project.
For semester two you will design a year 13 common room that follows a specific brief. Once you have resolved the design you will then create an exhibition to present your design.
Spatial Design - 6 Credits
You will design a year 13 common room to the brief provided. Literacy Credits
Presentation - 4 Credits
You will then make a model and a poster to showcase your design
DVC Techniques - 3 credits
External. You just need to show how you generate design ideas.

Use this site to model up your design. It is a great way to visualize your idea and communicate the final design.
Watch this video. It is a really helpful tool that you can use to help as a starting point for your design. Everyone's design needs to be generated from somewhere in order to pass the external
LO- Research Design ideas
SC – Report on existing designs
SC – Interpret own thoughts on research ideas.
On this page just gather a bunch of architectural inspired buildings that you like. Think of this page as a vison board and you are gathering inspiration. Add a few quick notes stating what you like and what aspects you may use when designing your own building.
LO- Research Design ideas
SC – Report on existing designs
SC – Interpret own thoughts on research ideas.
Similar to the first page, but this time get photos that relate more to common rooms and school buildings. Get interior and exterior images and then add notes about how you may include this into your design, or not. On this page you can then also add to the given brief, such as added kitchen space or games room.
LO – Generate an analysis on site.
SC – Research environmental factors
SC – Show how environmental and social factors effect location.
Your design is based at Hornby High School. You can now choose where you want to design it. The field, D block, by the gym, its up to you. Undertake a site evaluation on the site by taking photos, showing the sun paths and then looking into other environmental factors such as wind, noise, and how the location will work with the new school. Think about the social factors also such as how people use the location.
LO – Generate design ideas.
SC – Show multiple different designs.
SC – Outline key notes on each design
You now have to come up with at least 6 different quick ideas. This can be on one page or spread out over a couple. Draw some quick designs in 2D and 3D of what you are thinking and then. It is really important to add some notes saying the pro's and con's of each idea because it shows your thinking.
LO – Generate design ideas.
SC – Show multiple different designs.
SC – Outline key notes on each design
This page is the same as the one above. They are continuing their design ideas. You must then choose one of the designs, in which you will then work through a development process to resolve a design.
LO – Develop a design
SC – explore different options of a design
SC – Refine a chosen design
Take your chosen design and then develop it. You don't need to choose every single development, but you need to explore options and then note what you like/don't like and why. On this page you can explore overall shape of your design and how that will change for the better.
LO – Develop a design
SC – explore different options of a design
SC – Refine a chosen design
Continue this page from the previous one. Take the chosen aspects you want to develop and then look more into some smaller details you can develop like windows or verandahs. Again you need to explain your thoughts, link comments to the brief and make sure your design links to the previous pages.
LO – Illustrate how humans will use your design.
SC – Show human scale
SC – Develop design using human interaction.
Now you have your exterior design developed you can start to develop the interior. On this page you will draw the outside shape in floor plan and then quickly draw bubbles inside to allocate areas for the floor plan. This again needs to be related to the brief as you have to have a bathroom, study space and chill space. Draw a few of these to show you are exploring different layouts.
LO – Explore Floor plan options
SC – analyze functionally of floor plans
SC – Finalize a useable floor plan.
Follow on from the previous page, you will choose your favorite floor plana and then draw it to scale. Grid up your page so you can see where 1x1meter is and then work within that. Remember your building cant be bigger than 300m2. To work out the area you times the length by the width. Architectural knowledge is needed to be shown with dimensions, thick wall lines and appropriate scale of furniture.
LO – Explore location plan options
SC – analyze functionally of access to site
SC – Finalize a useable location plan.
In order to show a strong level of spatial design knowledge you need to communicate how your design sits on your chosen location. Draw the outline 3 times on your section but in different orientations. Add access lines for students as well as environmental facts like wind and sun paths. Add notes about how each orientation would work. Choose one of the layouts and explain why you choose this one.
LO – Generate an appropriate construction type for design
SC – Demonstrate how design is put together
Explore what the best way is to construct your design. There a many different ways but the two I suggest is either timber frame or steel frame. This page is key for excellence level as it shows your depth of thinking. Show how some framing would look and then a construction detail. Use the hand out provided to show the pro's and con's of your chosen structural system and then note why you chose this.
LO – Determine best finishes for design.
SC – Explore a range of materials
SC –Show a range of colors.
Gather a range of images showing what you want to put inside your design. Think about the kitchen, tables, chairs, desks, couches but then also finishes such as flooring, paint and surface finishes. Add notes on why you chose these and why they would suit. Relate to the brief as it needs to be fit for purpose.
LO – Determine best finishes for design.
SC – Explore a range of materials
SC –Show a range of colors.
This is the same as above and you can do this all on one page. The key part is to relate your choices to the brief as the task is for a year 13 common room. Ensure the things you have chosen work well in the space you have designed.
LO – Present final outcome
SC – Create final evaluation
SC – Show final design
This page is a way to showcase your design. Draw a high quality drawing of your design that best communicates it. Then you need an in depth final evaluation. In here it needs to link to the brief, acknowledge the opportunities and constraints and then have a reflection piece. Say what you like and what you don't. Explain why. Why you made your design decisions or why you didn't do something else.
Research
Same as year 11, you just need to list the pro's and con's of different design presentation types.
Remember at year 12 your depth of explanation of each one needs to be deeper to reflect a higher level of knowledge.
Key word to add is "because....." because this automatically makes you explain the "why".
Design Principles
Use the images provided to then break down design principles. This is a way for you to revise what you learnt in year 11 but also show me that you are identifying them. It is important that you then use these going forward to design and make your presentation. Key things to note: Hierarchy is key for images and title to show important aspects of your design. This draws the viewer to it.
Concept Page
This is like a bubble diagram page but for your boards. Quickly sketch where things may go and what they are. Keep in mind sizes and what you are wanting to show. Relate this back to the previous page of design principles. You will the choose one of these concepts to develop.
Development Page
Take photos of your work as you are doing it. Use this as evidence of your thinking. For example if you are putting your title on your poster, don't glue it down. Try it in a couple of locations. If you are doing it on the computer, screen shot your work and print it out. Explain what you have changed and why.
Final Evaluation
Take photos of your presentation. Then write up a final evaluation of your work. Explain the process you went though, how you applied design principles to this, what you like, what you don't like, and they key works are because and why. Make sure you explain yourself and your decision.
