Can we work with a partner or in a small group?
Yes, you can work with a partner or a small group (maximum of 4 students). Please note that even though you are working together to create a shared final product, each individual must submit their own application and weekly reflections that are authentic to their own personal experience and responsibilities.
How many hours are required for Senior Capstone Experience?
Each participant is required to devote 20 hours per week towards their project, for a total of 80 hours. You should include the time you spend on your reflections, the time you spend creating your final product, and the time you spend preparing for the final showcase in your hourly logs. The hourly requirement is reduced by 3 hours for each AP class you are enrolled in. However, if your class isn't meeting in person, you will not receive the hourly reduction. Hourly reductions also apply to any VHS or TEC courses. All AP courses incur the same hourly deduction. AP courses with labs do not deduct more hours than non-lab courses.
How do I get a mentor for Senior Capstone Experience?
You will need to ask. Please see the mentor information page for more detailed information about mentors and a list of parents who have volunteered to be a mentor.
Can my final product be a poster?
No, your final product cannot be a poster. You can use a poster during your showcase presentation to help explain what you created, but your final product needs to be reflective of a months worth of time and learning. Please see this list of possible final products if you aren't sure what to do.
Are there funds available to purchase supplies?
Unfortunately no, there are no funds available to purchase supplies for capstone projects. You will need to purchase any supplies necessary to complete your propsed project. You should keep this in mind before you submit your application. We strongly advise students to create no-cost or low-cost proposals.
What can I use as evidence in my weekly reflections?
Each week you will need to submit a reflection and evidence of your progress. The reflection prompt changes each week, but you will always be asked for evidence. Evidence could be photographs, video clips, audio clips, or screenshots of your project and progress. We understand that some internship locations won't let you take photographs inside their facilities, but you can submit photographs of your work on your final product to fulfill the requirement for evidence. Please contact your advisor (either Ms. Enos or Ms. Pond) if you aren't sure what you can use for evidence.
Can you "fail" Senior Capstone Experience?
Yes. If you do not successfully complete your proposed activities, you will need to return in the summer to earn the credits required to earn your diploma.
