The HHS Senior Capstone Experience is an opportunity for Hopkinton seniors, who are in good academic standing, to develop and implement a self-directed learning plan that enables them engage in a meaningful summative project that demonstrates their fulfillment of the vision of a Hopkinton High School graduate.
How it Works. . .
The Senior Capstone Experience begins with an idea. Using the HHS Vision of the Graduate as your guide, you will determine which type of project you want to design (Academic, Career, Leadership, or Community Service). You will decide on an end goal, a final product that you will work towards, and, with the help of your adult mentor, you will identify the specific tasks you will need to implement to reach your goal. Your plan must include enough activities to fill 20 hours a week for all 4 weeks of the program (80 total hours).
Proposals will fall into at least one of the following categories:
Once you have an idea and a plan, you fill out, and submit, your official proposal via the application portal below. Your application proposal will identify your idea, the category it falls under, your final product, and the specific weekly tasks that you will complete to create your final product. You will use the Capstone weekly template to outline your proposed tasks. Your final product needs to be reflective of the work you do over the course of your exploration. You cannot work for a month to create a poster. However, you can use a poster to explain your process during your formal showcase presentation at the end of May.
All applications will be reviewed by the Senior Capstone Experience Committee. Successful applicants will receive notification of approval. Applicant proposals that require revision will: receive specific feedback about what needs revision, have an opportunity to meet with the committee, have time to adapt the application, and be eligible to resubmit for approval consideration.
Participating students will, with the guidance of a mentor, implement the self management plan from their approved application. Students are required to find a mentor who agrees to guide them through the development and implementation of the project. Mentors should be adults with expertise in the subject or field the student wants to explore.
Starting the Monday after April break, participating students will be excused from all non AP, TEC, or performance classes, so that they may engage in, and complete, the required 20 hours per week of dedicated action towards completion of their experience. The 20 hour per week requirement is lessened by 3 hours for each AP, TEC, or performance course in which a student is enrolled.
Students will complete and submit the required weekly reflections and timesheets to catalogue the hours they dedicate towards weekly exploration. Weekly reflections are due no later than 9pm on Sunday during the 4-week duration of the experience. Students will use schoology to complete the reflections and timesheets.
At the end of the allotted time, students will create a tangible product (not a poster) that shows what they have learned, achieved, or created as a direct result of participation in the Senior Capstone Experience. Students will formally present their final product to the Capstone Experience Committee at the Senior Capstone Experience Showcase on Tuesday, May 25th, in the athletic center.
*PLEASE NOTE*
The Senior Capstone Experience replaces your final four weeks of course work in your classes. Failure to complete any components of the Senior Capstone Experience may result in a student needing summer credit recovery courses to receive their diploma.
