This school year, the Browning Springs YSC has partnered with Madisonville's First United Methodist Church to offer "Backpack Blessings", which is dedicated to improving the lives of hungry students at times when other resources are not available. The program provides a bag full of nutritious student-friendly, shelf-stable foods to students over the weekend. Bags are packed each week and are discreetly distributed by the YSC to participating students every Friday during the school year.
There are more than 16.2 million children in this country who are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Students are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but we want to make sure they're getting nutritional meals over the weekend, too.
How is a student selected for the program?
Campus administrators, faculty and staff members identify students that have a need to be in the program. Once a student is selected, the parent/guardian is contacted and informed that their child has been referred to the Backpack Blessing Program. Parent permission is required for students to participate in the program.
