Pamela Foreman's leadership class took on the Civic Action Project in Virginia State University's first Tri-Cities Regional STEAM and Literary Expo. Students decided to update or clean up King's Court Playground, a recently renovated local park with plans to add new landscaping prior to the grand re-opening. The leadership class worked for two weeks to make two benches, including painting the benches, as well as painted rocks to place along the new trail at the park. Scroll down for pictures of the makerspace work of making benches, or read on to see more about their project.
Tools used: Tape measures, speed square, pocket hole jig, table saw, miter saw, clamps, power drill, impact driver, paint and brushes.
"As a class, we met with Parks and Rec at the park to plant trees and bushes and install the benches and place the rocks along the trail. Part of the competition requirements included the class documenting the entire project from start to finish in a photograph or video format and produce a chronological video to present. At the competition, the leadership class presented the video and answered questions of the judges and at the conclusion of the competition, won 1st place in the Civic Project Action. The students were beyond ecstatic with their win and I believe it encourages them to be involved in more community service projects to make Hopewell a better place to live." ---Pamela Foreman
