Pocket holes allow special screws to go through two pieces of wood diagonally, making a fast and stable bond which can be combined with wood glue to make them even stronger. Pocket holes can also be filled with wood dowels, wood filler, or special wooden plugs. Most builders prefer to instead just use them in less visible places on projects.
The frame of this bench was assembled with pocket hole joinery.
