A placement year offers a unique opportunity for students to grow both personally and professionally. Through practical experience and interaction with others, students can deepen their understanding of the knowledge gained in their studies. The success of this placement depends on the student's commitment and the support provided by the host organisation and the Placement Tutor. This support should include diverse experiences, interaction with colleagues, and transparent information about the company's mission and values. While students should strive to contribute meaningfully to the organisation, employers are encouraged to view them as valuable learners, not merely temporary employees. By providing opportunities for growth and development, employers can help students fulfil their potential and make a positive impact on the world. The Placement Tutor is to try to ensure the student gains these critical opportunities to develop and apply their knowledge.
STUDENT STATUS
Students undertaking an approved placement year as an integrated part of their studies will remain registered as a student for the duration of their placement year and will still have access to all student benefits: NUS, Unidays & council tax discount/exemptions and if working in London can get an 18+ Student Oyster Photocard. Students can also still access all our support services whilst on placement (library, sporting facilities, counselling etc).
DISABLED STUDENTS AND LEARNING SUPPORT PLANS
We encourage students to disclose any disability or additional support requirements with the employer and ask that they make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for placement students who disclose a disability (Equality Act 2010). Students working in the UK should receive one visit at work from their Placement Tutor. The Placement Tutor will arrange to meet the student and their supervisor. The Placement Tutor can ask the placement student to make the appropriate on-site arrangements (security and parking arrangements, booking a meeting room and liaising with their manager on availability) we ask employers to support the student with this should they need assistance.
