Reese Holmes and Aidan Ibbitson
We chose to work together on this project due to our shared passion for the issue of homelessness and poverty in Massachusetts. We want to help those in our community by providing accurate care and support to women and children affected by homelessness in our area.
Reese helps organize information collected into our Shared Google Drive, handles finances, and regulates communication between our group and community partner.
Aidan gathers information about homelessness and finds out ways to help the people who suffer from it.
We want to address the issue of homelessness in Massachusetts. As of 2020. Massachusetts ranks 6th nationwide in homelessness. This project will greatly benefit our community. By spreading awareness on the issue of homelessness and working with local shelters, we will be able to aid in reducing the rate of homelessness in Massachusetts.
In our research, we found that Massachusetts had some of the highest rates of homelessness, and consequently with that, some of the highest housing prices and rates of unemployment. This issue is important to us because we feel that it is important to focus on giving equal opportunities to everyone.
Our project goals are to:
Support people who struggle with poverty and homelessness.
Support the people who help out the homeless, because they can help us reach our goal quicker and more efficiently. (homeless shelters and homes)
Educate the public and the community about the causes and effects of homelessness. Sharing information and providing easily accessible resources for them to learn more about these issues.
Established a community partnership with Abby's House in Worcester, MA.
Designed and put up a bulletin board in HHS hallway to educate students walking by about homelessness in MA and the future/progress of our project.
Set up and advertised a GoFundMe fundraising page to receive and send direct donations to Abby's House.
We have the pleasure of working with a shelter in Worcester, named The Abby Kelly Foster House. They are a homeless shelter that takes in and helps women get back on their feet. They provide a stable and safe environment for women. Their goal is to help women that suffer from homelessness and poverty. They will help us by guiding us on how to help homeless people. We look to them as partners and mentors to help us do something about homelessness and poverty.
After a discussion with our community partner, we molded our project to better support their current needs at this time. As our initial plan was to create care packages for goods for the women at the shelter, this changed upon speaking to them. We decided to help them on the monetary side and support their upcoming May Spring-Tacular event and fundraiser as this is one of their main fundraising initiatives every year.
Support our GoFundMe! Our GoFundMe above directly supports Abby's House and their May Spring-Tacular Fundraiser this past week!
We are proud to have accomplished goals and worked together to achieve the progress we have with this project thus far. With the creation of our GoFundMe page and our bulletin board in the Holliston High School hallway, we were able to increase our community awareness. We utilized social media to increase our presence via Instagram and Facebook and shared our GoFundMe and resource materials to both sites.
