Our plans are to create a more significant connection between clubs and administrators, as we see student advocacy as the most direct way to produce consequential change. Our school has a plethora of avenues for change although, many aren't necessarily known to the student body. To create more awareness about student opportunities, we will create a student-led focus group comprised of the executives from the humanitarian club, culture club, GSA, and student advisory for a unified voice from students on policies or conflicts.
We have met with GSA, Culture Club, Student Advisory Council (SAC), and Humanitarian Club to discuss their potential involvement as well as having met with Mr. Vergne, Director of Social-Emotional Learning & Equality. Recently we met with Principal Mrs. Bottomely, and Ms. Archambault and they've given us an opportunity to meet with Antonia Thompson, a director of several Racial justice roundtables. We have discussed with Mr. Bilodeau. the band teacher and leader of GSA of his involvement with our meetings and other clubs.
There have been multiple instances where slurs were found written on the walls of Holliston High School and Robert Adams Middle School, but despite efforts from the administration, these incidents have only intensified in recent years. We've felt that the hateful rhetoric spread by the loud minority is not an accurate representation of our school but is nonetheless a severe damper on the tolerance and comfort provided to students at our school. Additionally, several cliques and exclusionary groups populate our school, which causes a disheartening amount of division throughout the school and often leads to poor communication between clubs and administrators. These circumstances sparked an idea to simultaneously address both these issues by creating a council of student leaders from many different clubs and backgrounds to produce a unified voice for the student body. We plan to address critical topics such as school safety, hate speech policies, student-led assemblies, and dress codes with the help of the humanitarian club, GSA, the culture club, and the student advisory council to ensure a meaningful and long-lasting outlet of change in our community.
-Have our first meeting after spring break, May 9th(?) TBD
-Contact club leaders and other students who are interested in getting involved
- Have at least 3 students meetings before summer break
-Meet and report back to admin about our thoughts as a group
All meeting dates have been confirmed with the first on May 18th followed by May 25, June 8th and June 15th. The Roundtables are going to be led by Antonia Thompson the Director of Racial Justice Initiatives at the Middlesex District Attorney's office. These meetings are intended to empower students in our community from a wide variety of social groups and clubs, allowing for a more tolerant environment in our schools. However, we plan to continue these meetings at a similar time after these roundtables are over to have a sustained avenue for communication between clubs and administration for years to come. So far, we have 9 students who've applied to be part of the group, and we hope there'll be more by the first meeting this Thursday.
We are trying to gain interest in students meeting after the roundtable ends and are encouraged to fill out the google form.
