Who Am I? And who are WE?
Starting locally and ending widespread - we're reversing the progress of hunger and food waste step by step.
You've heard people complain about the quality of school food or town food for a long time now... You may even be one of them. As a student myself, I've watched food get picked up and immediately thrown away, wasted.
Why knowing that we could initiate change, would we settle for less?
My name is Lucie Barré. I am a junior at Holliston High School.
I am...
Creative, problem-solving
Determined, tenacious
A leader, trustable
Ready to go to larger lengths to do what I believe needs to be done.
But who are we as a whole?
We are strong together, and as human beings, we have enough willpower and manpower to begin a change if we see fit. We are a nation of free people, that won't back down from opportunities to benefit the planet, therefore benefitting ourselves in the future.
COMMUNITY NEEDS
A known worldwide crisis, hunger plagues everyone around you, even if it isn’t fully noticeable. In Massachusetts alone, 1.8 million people (out of a population of 7 million) are living in food insecurity, meaning that they are unsure of their ability or accessibility to their next meal.
As a large problem that isn’t often discussed, Massachusetts wastes a whopping 1 million tons of food per year. Every enterprise that is provided with food from food services ends up throwing away almost 85% of it throughout the span of a year. Additionally, (to represent this problem locally) schools in Massachusetts found that 27% to 53% of the food that is served to students gets thrown in the trash.
PROJECT GOALS AND PLANS
Specific: Decreasing the percentage of food insecurity within communities throughout Massachusetts. Starting small, in local towns around Holliston, the more success in the project the more widespread it may have the opportunity to become.
Measurable: Programs such as Project Bread use census data to understand the levels of food insecurity in the state. By following their progress throughout the years 2022 to 2023, we can appropriately measure the impact of raising awareness towards this sort of project.
Attainable: A reiteration of “the more the merrier”: the more networking, the better! Hundreds of associations focus their power as a mass organization towards triumphing over hunger. Partnering local schools with these corporations may make it possible for better food management in our communities.
I've spent a majority of my project time on understanding the true "behind the scenes" of school food systems, and have understood that a lot of the problems arise from wellness policies and contracts from a higher power than what one high schooler can dream to change - but with the help of teachers and other connections I've made, the problems can be fixed, if we make it to the source.
PROJECT PARTNERSHIP(S)
Holliston Food Pantry
An organization that all of Holliston knows and trusts, the food pantry supplies nutrition to all of Holliston, free of charge.
This association is one that could benefit from the mounds of food that are wasted each day, which can instead be donated.
Massachusetts Farm to School Program
As previously mentioned, the MFSP would greatly benefit our high school, as they connect schools like us to local farms.
These local farms harvest fresh, healthy, and profitable foods that can change the unhealthy dynamic that today's menus involve.
Composting Club
A student-led, non-profit organization in Holliston High School has significantly reduced food scrap waste through new compost trash bins
Working with another club that is focused on a similar problem of food waste can bring more people together against hunger.
James Arena Derosa
Running for state representative in 2022, and has been associated with the school, politics wise, for a long time.
He has connections with many of the food companies that provide schools with equipment and ingredients for everyday lunches and breakfasts.
