Inspired by the injustices in our criminal system and focused on Sustainable Development Goals #4 (Quality Education) and #16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). Books of Hope strives to provide local accessibility to textbooks and books for incarcerated individuals. Our hope is to give people the opportunity they need to better their future and reintegrate into society. We hope to partner with The Petey Greene Program, which focuses on tutoring incarcerated/formerly incarcerated individuals through volunteering.
My name is Dayanara Castro, I am currently a senior at Holliston High School; I am currently enrolled in Service Learning and the Global Citizens Program. Both of which have contributed to this project, another big influence has been my criminology class which made me aware of all the issues the U.S Prison System has.
The United States alone houses 20% of the worldwide prison population but only makes up 5% of the world population. Prisons affect our communities, economy, and most importantly people“s lives. Since the founding of country incarceration has been used to further agendas and oftentimes people are treated as less than human; we are stuck in a vicious cycle of incarceration- one that doesn't provide productive solutions- something that has been going on for too long.
One of the biggest issues we face is our high recidivism rate (76.6%). We need to look for ways to keep people from returning to prison and give them more opportunities once they get released.
Providing people who were incarcerated with education or their G.E.Ds allows them to have more opportunities to find a job and pay for their expenses.
