Sally Spencer-Divin

HHS Class of 1998

Sally Spencer-Divin played volleyball, basketball, softball, golf, and ran track while at Hillsboro High School. Sally had an eventful freshman year. She played on the varsity basketball team in her first year of high school. For her efforts during the 1993-94 season she was selected to the All-District Team as the Newcomer of the Year and was also awarded the team MVP award at the annual sports banquet. While playing golf she placed 2nd at the district tournament and 10th at regionals. Track and field was also kind to Sally as she was part of the District Champion 400 and 800 meter relay teams. Individually she medaled in the triple and high jumps. She qualified for regionals in the high jump, triple jump, 400 meter relay, and the 800 meter relay.

Her sophomore campaign began with a 2nd place finish at the district cross country meet, earning her team MVP honors. She was also selected to the All-District Volleyball Team as the Newcomer of the Year, again earning the team MVP honor. The girls’ basketball team also won the district championship during 1994-95 season. Sally again received All-District honors being selected as Sophomore of the Year. She suffered a back injury during the basketball season that limited her participation in the spring sports. Sally was able to make it back for track where she finished 3rd in the 400 meters, 1st with the 800 meter relay, and 3rd place with the 1600 meter relay.

When Sally started her junior year, the focus was basketball. She did not run cross country or play volleyball. Due to the injury the previous year she tried to improve with rehab and core strengthening. Her competition was limited in the spring sports as she wanted to make sure that she was ready to go for the Summer League Basketball - AAU, which was critical for her recruiting. During her junior year she shot 42% from the floor, almost 39% from the arc, 73% from the free throw line, while averaging 18.7 points per game. Throw in the fact that she also had 2.2 assists, 3.3 steals, and 5.5 rebounds per game and you have a well-rounded basketball player.

Because of her success in AAU during the summer between her junior and senior years, she signed early with TCU the beginning of her senior year. Because of the fact that Sally had already signed to play basketball at TCU she then felt like she had an obligation to stay healthy and had to again limit her involvement in both fall and spring sports. Sally missed playing volleyball, golf, softball, and participating in track and field events. However, she did not miss the grueling rigors of cross country and track. Sally said, “Those events are not for the weary, and it takes a lot of guts to push yourself every day in those sports, but you really get to know your mental toughness and what it takes to persevere.”

After graduating from HHS, Sally attended Texas Christian University on a basketball scholarship. There she was a four-year letterman. Sally served as team captain during her senior season. She also became the first recipient of the Janice Dziuk Award. The Horned Frogs qualified for the NCAA Tournament during her sophomore-senior seasons. Sally also had the opportunity to do an internship with Congresswoman Kay Granger.

After graduating from TCU, Sally accepted a position in Credit Analysis with TexasBank. She currently works with Citizens National Bank in Hillsboro. Sally is married to Andrew Divin. They have three children - Tess, Tate, and Ty attend school in the Hillsboro ISD. Sally is active in Hillsboro community. She is a member of the First Methodist Church, serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club, and also sits on the Board of Directors for Leadership Hillsboro.

The Hall of Fame Committee is very proud to add such an outstanding individual as Sally Spencer-Divin to the Athletic Hall of Fame. Congratulations on your accomplishments and being a member of the Hillsboro High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2015.
