Arthur "Pic" Brown

Peabody Class of 1944

Arthur L. “Pic” Brown, Sr. was a standout football and baseball player from Hillsboro, Texas. He attended Peabody High School. While at Peabody he competed in football, basketball, baseball, and track earning all-state honors in football and baseball. After graduating from Peabody High School in 1944 he joined the United States Army, serving for five years.

After his military service “Pic” attended Prairie View A & M University becoming a multi-sport star competing in both football and baseball. Possessing a cannon of an arm, legend has it that “Pic” was able to throw a football the length of the gridiron. He was a 4-year letterman in both football and baseball. His playing career earned him All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors in both football and baseball. The football team won SWAC championships in 1951 & 1952 during his playing career. He compiled a 25-2 record during his pitching career for the Panthers and threw a no-hitter against Bishop College during his senior campaign.

Upon graduation from PVAMU he served in the capacity of an assistant football coach for his alma mater. During the 1953 season he served as the backfield coach. The team was the 1953 Orange Blossom Bowl champion and was crowned National Football Champions. For a short time “Pic” enjoyed a professional baseball career playing for the Abilene Blue Sox of the West Texas-New Mexico League, a farm system team of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mr. Brown is also a 2006 inductee into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Mr. Brown left this world when is heavenly Father called him home in 1972. “Pic” left behind a legacy that will span for years to come. That legacy includes three daughters, two sons, eight grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren: Sandra L. Jennings and husband Henry, Lydell Jackson and husband Rick, Kay Larry and husband Roosevelt, Arthur L. Brown, Jr. and wife Irma, and Joseph H. Brown.
